Guys
As a complete amateur I usually use DivxToDVD to convert my AVI's and burn to DVD. I'm sure the results wouldnt impress an expert but they are fine for me.
Things went a little pear shaped yesterday though when I encoded an AVI and it was obvious the audio was not synchronised. All's well I thought as I have TMPGEncXpress3 and remembered it has a setting that allowed the audio to be shifted.
I adjusted the audio and initially decided to encode to AVI which I could then feed into DivxToDVD. THe encode time was shown as around 4 hours. Then I decided that it may be more sensible to burn to MPEG 2 so I selected the DVD output. Haveing spent some time researching the many settings I ended up with progressive video and CBR.
The encode time is now at 6.5 hours!!
My simpletons question is why can DivxtoDVD encode and burn the DVD from AVI in about 2 hours while its taking TMPG 6.5 hours just to create the mpeg file! ??
I'm sure there is a simple answer.
Anyone help please?
Cheers
Karl

yep, there's actually a few reasons for this....first off, could be that divxtodvd is using a lower quality setting for encoding...this will decrease the amount of time an encode takes, secondly if there's any filters being applied.......but the BIGGEST reason is tmpgenc is coded in a rather inefficiant programming language (delphi, if i remember correctly) it's rather unforutnate that they cant scrap the current versions of tmpgenc and rebuild it in maybe c or c++...or asm even......any of those ways would DRASTICALLY cut down encode times......tmpgenc is probably the easiest to use as far as mpeg encoders, but that's definately one of it's downfalls......if you wanna keep the speed up, keep using divxtodvd, otherwise give some other programs a try.....maybe cce or canopus procoder if your willing to foot a few bux...otherwise SUPER or quenc if your not......
