  1. Hi guys,

I have been trying many times already to convert a DVD video to AVI format.
That works, but Tmpgenc Xpress won't let me encode my file in 16:9 format.
All the settings are correct, no doubt about that, because when I try to encode
to MPEG, WMV, MOV, ... format, it works.

When I choose for AVI format, it encodes in 16:9, but within a 4:3 box. This creates
two black bars. Resizing the video in the filter menu doesn't do the trick. I encode with
Xvid codec, with very carefully chosen settings. Changing the aspect ratio doesn't do shit...

This is a very strange problem, and it only occurs when I choose for AVI container. All the TMPGenc
settings are set to PAL 16:9, and the video itself is exactly 720x576. I respect these settings everywhere,
but only the AVI container seems not to be capable of understanding that, whilst it encodes a 16:9 image
    in a 4:3 box...

    Anyone can help?

  2. The AVI container doesn't really support aspect ratio flags. You have to set the display or pixel aspect ratio in the video codec's private data. Then you have to use players that support those aspect ratio flags.

In the absence of flags players will assume square pixels so the display aspect ratio will equal the frame size aspect ratio. In your case 720:576, or 5:4. If you want to use square pixel encoding and retain the proper aspect ratio you have resize the frame to a 16:9 ratio. Like ~704x400.

  3. Thanks for the reply!

I manually resized the display window to 720 x 404. That gave the right video output size, but now I encountered
a new problem. All seemed fine, but when I play the video (BSplayer), it shocks every 10-15 seconds. When I try to play the file
with windows media-player, all goes well. I've been encoding AVI video for years now, and I never had this problem. Is it the
Xvid codec, or is it TMPGEnc or maybe BSplayer?

    Sander.
