  1. I have just installed FairUse Wizard 2.2 and have ripped to .avi but when I try to open the file in my editor, vegas 5, it doesn't recognize the file. vegas says that it the stream attributes of the file cannot be determined. it opens and plays just fine with windows media player and nero showtime. to get the video to open in vegas i have been reencoding the .avi that FairUse made to .mp4 with Nero Recode 2, then I open the .mp4 file with Quicktime Pro, and export it as an .avi. then my editor will recognize QTPro's .avi. my question is what is Quicktime Pro doing that FairUse isn't??? If you need more info to answer my question, i understand; just ask.

In FairUse select ffdshow for encoding (think it is still called ffVfW) then select something like huffyuv or DV. NLE's tend to not work well with codecs like XviD and they aren't suited for editing anyway.

  3. For some reason it is not giving me the option to use the ffVFw codec; i have, since my original post, installed DivX and now that option comes up and it works for what I am trying to do...i don't really understand all that well what codecs are/do...i just know when what I want to do works! thanks for your help.

Well you need to have ffdshow installed.

Yeah, DivX's decoder has work arounds I think and therefor tends to work much better with NLE's. Still doesn't really change the fact that DivX really isn't that suitable for editing, although I guess you could limit it to iframes only. Doesn't mean that the Vegas would let you edit without re-encoding though.

I wish I had found this out earlier. I paid good money for total video converter and it is worthless. The ouput is a bit average with the trial version but the full version has bugs and the picture quality is terrible. I contacted the company to get my money back but they refused, blaming my computer. I tried it on two friends computers and it crashed both.
