i've been doing this for a while but i always have a few dvds that come out choppy at some points or skipps, or freezes. i use office depot 16x -/+ media, benq 1640 (rebaged), playing on toshiba 417 (from costco). it works well on a pc but goofy on my stand alone. i'm compressing 7gig to 4.7gig discs. using decrypter and dvdshrink. i've read many of the past posts and don't think it's with the layer change, because they get screwy at the end mainly and in the middle sometimes, and i think the media is pretty decent (riteks). i don't know...any ideas will help greatly. Thanks.

Have you tried other media? This is the most common cause of what you mention, especially the problems at the end of the DVD. If you are using Shrink, lower the size of the file down to 4.4 or even 4.2GB if you want to use the same media.
The second thought is your standalone DVD player is having reading problems. Have you tried the same DVDs on a different player? A software player is not a good indication of properly made DVD.
Layer change isn't much of a concern unless you are using DL media.
