  1. I have some divx files (yes, that is the extension as well).
As I have have the latest xvid, and recall an incompatability between the two competing codecs, I'm looking to convert the divx files to xvid.

Odd to be sure, but, I want to keep xvid.

    Ideas?

Just enable DivX decoding in XviD.

  3. I have that, but, files wouldn't play. ?

I installed VLC, which would play the files (natch). Though, I'm wondering why xvid didn't pick up the assocation.

Try renaming the extension to AVI, maybe?

  5. Nope, file opened but wouldn't play outside of VLC.

What does GSpot says about the file, if you renamed it to extension .AVI?

  7. "Failed to create instance of DIVX Decoder Filter".. etc
Says the above with either .avi or .divx extension. Though. gspot does indicate codecs are installed.

I uninstalled xvid 1.1 (clean) and resinstalled, to no avail (not surprising).

    /edit
hmm, I wonder if the problem is v1.1 itself. As now, gspot will not render files with avi extension either, with same error. Will uninstall 1.1 and retry 1.0

Actually, I'm wondering if an issue isn't with gspot now. With xvid uninstalled (and its leftover .ax removed) gspot is still saying codec is installed (after reboot) and yet, avi's won't play outside of VLC.

This is a bugger of an issue.

No, just reinstall the latest binary of FFDShow or XVID. They'll decode DIVX files just fine.

Hmmm... You sure ou got the BINARY of XVID? My file says

    XviD-1.1.0-30122005 _Final Release_

And I got it from http://www.koepi.org/

Yup, thats the one I have.

FYI, I uninstalled that, and installed latest FFDShow... same issue.

This tells me that the problem is with the files themselves.

Though, why they would play fine in VLC (yet not out of it, even with the codecs installed) is beyond me.

    VLC don't use external codecs.

See what VLC says about the files being read. It's under View / Streaming and media Info...

Sounds like maybe they aren't avi's.
As well as using internal decoders, VLC also has internal splitters for various formats; avi, mkv, ogm, mp4, etc.

Shows up as DIV3, as in gspot.

  15. im gonna guess that the file itself is corrupt somehow...maybe you can go old school and try divfix on it? and does it open in say virtualdub? If so you can probably just rebuild the file by going video direct stream copy and audio direct stream copy.....thats if there's an issue with the actual file header, that oughtta fix it...if its within the video stream itself, it may or may not even be fixable........give it a shot and see how it goes.

    Good call.

Won't open in VirtualDub (see error in screen below).
    However, DivFix shows no errors.

Note... both programs failed to recognize the files. I had to change the drop down menu to "All Files" for them to be seen.

(Yes, I'm aware that VLC has its own codecs, which is why I used it, and mentioned that the files actually play).

    /edit... screen didn't post.

DIV3 = DivX 3.11alpha = MS MPEG-4 V3 which isn't actually MPEG-4, therefor XviD can't decode it. You need to install DivX, ffdshow, 3ivX or something else that can decode it.

Looks like you have standard avi's renamed .divx as I wasn't awear that the divx media format support divx3.

Scroll up a bit m8, and you'll see...

FYI, I uninstalled that, and installed latest FFDShow... same issue.
However, what I did hadn't tried, is renaming the extensions to avi, after installing FFDshow.. and sure enough... they now play!

So, thanks for that post, reminded me to try that again with the new codec!

/me is a happy camper again.
    Thanks to all involved.
