I am looking for an alternative to shrinking my DVD files I backed up with DVD Fab Gold... any recommendations. I keep getting errors with Shrink on more recent DVD's.

will it allow one to keep menus in tact as DVD shrink did??

Or CloneDVD2. Not freeware and wont back-up protected DVDs but in combination with AnyDVD or DVD Fab is a pretty good 'one-click' solution. Will back up any number of the titles with or without the the menus.
Personally I prefer DVD Shrink though. May be worth trying to figure out what the problem rather than changing programmes.

EDIT: Dumb ass question...why are you using DVD Fab Gold? If you want to shrink to a single DVD why not just use the free version of DVD Fab and then DVD Shrink? -
A dual layer drive allows you to avoid the need to degrade your backups by shrinking them.

i have DL Drive, but the discs are expensive.
Anyway, DVD Fab free versions is always crashing, then DVD Shrink gets a memory error even after I have backed up the DVD using DVD Fab Gold. I just tried DVD2one & it will crash about 5% trough the movie. Any ideas??? The movie I am trying to back up is Dark WaterFather knows best. -
latest version of DVDFabdecrypter is suppose to correct the memory error when using shrink; if you have not updated, you should latest version is 2.9.6.6 I believe

Does it only crash with this dvd? You can backup other dvds? I use dvd rebuilder and dvd fab decrypter.
-
I have had DVD Fab Decrypter crash with most DVD's. DVD2one is still crashing at about 11%. They just shut themselves down & give me the option to send the error to Microsoft. Now I am trying ANY DVD in conjuntion with Clone DVD. Thank God for trial ware

DVDFabDecrypter and DVDShrink never crash on my old clunker computer. There is nothing wrong with DVDShrink or DVDFabDecrypter....I use them faithfully.
-
while I don't use DVD shrink very often since dual layer discs are now very cheap I can say that DVD Fab Decrypter in it's latest version has never failed me.
-
where are you getting DL discs cheap?? & Are they printable??

I either buy them on sale locally for around $3 or in bulk for under $2. When backing up important media I do not wish to rely on shrinking the data and corrupting it when viewing on a large screen. The only time I might consider using DVD shrink is when testing something, I don't care about the quality, or shrinking results in no less than 85%. I do not use printable media because I consider that a waste of ink/money better spent on toner used for documents. A sharpie works great and makes the copy distinguishable.
I only backup important stuff. Since it's important I consider shrink a waste of time as I want my backup to read and display like the original without shrunken and missing data. Anyone who backs up a disc by shrinking less than 85% is just wasting time or they really don't care about quality. Riteks at supermediastore have worked great for me(NEC 3540a, 3550a). They have printable at under $2 too. -
OK... I Just had success with ANY DVD in conjuntion with Clone DVD, problem now is the final movie is really pixelated. Never had this prob with DVD Shrink. Any more suggestions?

i just noticed you're trying to backup dark water. did you watch it yet? i'm glad I have a movie rental subscription because I'd definitely want my money back. In my opinion, it's not worth the .20 plus purchase price to back it up. pixelation is usually caused by bad media or a errors while ripping. CloneDVD by default ignores errors which makes things much worse.

As for DVDShrink not opening Fab output, try running it through VobBlanker, hit process, that's it. Or, sometimes DVDRebuilder will accept Fab output when DVDShrink will not.Pull! Bang! Darn! -

Year Recode 2 is an updated verision of shrink. I still find that shrink works with 95 % of my stuff and when it does'nt it's a problem with the ripping of new disks, I never rip thru Shrink only thru Decrypter or DVDFabdecrypter.
As far as Dual layers are going They are cheaper I've had the opportunity of getting them on sale for under $2.00 each, but I pass. I have my Book type on my dual layer set to DVD_rom and I still have issues playing them on different players. Sometimes they boot up sometimes not. Single Layer disks are dirt cheap I have gotten them as cheap as .13 a disk, more dependable, and plays on more players. If I remove the crap and do movie only, most movies are 70-95% of the original, and that still looks great. -

But if I'm not in a hurry ... I use CloneDVD to take out the crap and then I use DVD Rebuilder Pro with CinemaCraft Encoder SP 2.5 and do 9 Passes ... takes around 500 minutes to process with DVD-RB. -
dudeman, if you own DVD Fab Gold, you can upgrade to DVD Fab Platinum for $24.95 US: http://www.dvdidle.com/order_upgrade.htm
which basically adds DVD Fab Express, which shrinks any DVD to fit on a single layer. It has DVD Region & CSS Free built in (as does your Fab Gold), so there's no need to buy Any DVD to overcome copy protection.
Of course, if Fabdecrypter is crashing on your system, you probably should try the free trial of Fab Platinum first.
