I have a whole 60 minutes worth of tape of this past Xmas. I wanna put it on DVD for keepsake and that. I used Windows Movie Maker and choose the DV_AVI format and started capturing the video. Well about half way thru it was already 6 gigs. So thinking this aint goona work since it will be 12 gigs at the end of tape. so started over and choose a different selection which the output file would be WMV. Basically when i have a AVI file i use a converter to convert it to VOB/VTS(video_ts folder) so my dvd player can read it. Not sure what to do with the WMV file. I read about the program called STOIK but it looks like there are some issues with it. anyother ideas?

Start again.
DV-AVI eats approx. 13gb per hour of footage, so you estimate was close. WMM is limited to basically DV or WMV for output. I would download WinDV to transfer your footage, as DV.
Do you want to edit it, or just put it on DVD as it is ?
If you want to edit it, you can use WMM, but again, output as DV AVI when you are finished. There are better programs around, but if this is a one off, WMM is fine.
Once you have your edited video you need to encode it as mpeg-2, author it for DVD, then burn it. Download the demo versions of tmpgenc plus and tmpgenc DVD author. Encode with tmpgenc Plus (you can encode as mpeg2 for the first 14 days, I believe), then author with TDA (30 days fully functioning). You can burn with TDA, but imgburn is a better choice. Use folder2iso to create an ISO image for imgburn to burn with.
Your problem is real estate - you don't have enough. This will require around 30 - 40 GB all up by the time you get your original footage (13 gb), your edited footage (10gb), your mpeg files (4.3gb), your DVD (4.3gb) and your ISO (4.3gb)
Your other option is something like mainconcept to capture and encode your footage on the fly. The AMD should be fast enough. This will require a lot less space (4.3 GB for the mpeg files, 4.3 for the DVD) and use TDA to author.Read my blog here.

no editing. i just want to convert it then put it on DVD. I used the VSO divx to DVD program but doesnt recognize the WMV file. I also have a program Proshow Gold but took 3 hrs just to import the 800mb WMV file.

I had done the same thing, converting to AVI with software, converting to MPG2 on the fly, and even using a capture card.
Too much work. Got a settop DVD recorder (they are less than $100 now) and record straight to DVD. Then reauthor (4.3gb max) on PC, add menus. -
"no editing. i just want to convert it then put it on DVD"
I can't make any comments on quality, but using Nerovision can capture/encode/burn to DVD RW in one step. 'bout the only solution I'm aware of besides spending the cash for drives or external box, and the OEM version of 6 (make sure it has DVD stuff) should cost less then $10 US.
