I am starting to have problems with my Yamada DVD player, some of the stuff i try to play in it now says QPEL Codec not supported, i have also been reading somewhere about GMC ?
What do i need to be looking for in a DVD player's specification to be sure it will play any of the Divx and Xvid formats, as i am not really that technically minded maybe someone could recommend a few players available in the UK
Cheers in advance
Andy

You shouldn't use QPel & GMC when encoding to DivX/XviD - not many players support it. If you've not encoded these yourself, the one who did, probably A) didn't know what he/she was doing or B) didn't have standalone playback in mind.
You could always reencode to Video DVD if you really have to make it play on your DVD player.

Sure someone out there can recommend a player that supports it, as i do have a lot of stuff in that format and dont want to go the the trouble of converting etc as like i say, i am not at all techinically minded

To buy a DVD player just to play some funny coded Divx stuff is not a wise thing, on my opinio,, but nevertheless, if you really want to do it, go with your Divx files to a shop, in a timeframe when they are not that busy, ask them to try a few Divx players and buy the first one who will read the files.
You might even find something cheap, you never know.
If it is cheap do not throw away your existing DVD player, but use it alongside the new one.

Thats still no help to me at all, but ive got an list of players off a guy on another another forum site, all suporting qpel, gmc and numerous other bits as well, already ordered it also, no shops round here for miles

You will need a player that is fully Divx Pro compliant (most aren't), such as the Oppo OPDH971H.

QPEL and GMC are used in the encoding process to improve the video quality. I'm not sure how much it improves the image, but it's probably minimal.

The problem with QPEL and GMC is that they require your DVD player to have a more powerful chipset than what it has.

My Philips DVP 642 also lacks the chipset. It has an ESS based chipset. The Philips DVP 5100 however has a mediatek chipset which is more powerful and will play most of those files, no problem.

Therefore as Krispy Kritter pointed out, the problem you have playing the files is due to your DVD player and not the codec itself. And not that there's anything wrong with your DVD player, it just isn't powerful enough to play those files. By the way I find that around 95% of the files on the net don't have QPEL or GMC.

XviD uses 2/3 warp point GMC and no current players can decode 3 warp point GMC.

DivX uses 1 warp point GMC, which I believe even the 642 can handle. 1 warp point GMC doesn't improve quality though, which is why XviD only ever uses 2 or 3 warp point.

Think ESS is about the only chipset still in use that can't handle qpel.
