The latest release. The mod version is a modification to handle different file types. Unless you need it, just stick with the original as it is most recently updated.

I use virtualdubmpeg2 the most as it works with vob files and mpeg files.

VirtualDub is the original and most up to date, but it only opens AVI and MPEG1 files (for the most part).
VirtualDubMPEG2 is pretty much up to date and can also open MPEG2 files. Unfortunately, it performs 3:2 pulldown when you open MPEG files marked for 3:2 pulldown.
VirtaulDubMod hasn't been updated in a few years but it handles far more file types than the other two (input and output). It doesn't perform 3:2 pulldown when it opens MPEG files -- it gives you the progressive frames as they're encoded within the file.
I use all three, VirtualDubMPEG the most, followed by VirtualDubMod, then VirtualDub. -
Virtualmod has one thing going for it apart from handling vobs and that's the script editor that vitualdub dosent have ... handy for for those ripped dvd title's ... build simple script , save as vob_01.lst in the same folder as title vobs , open lst file ... bingo , you have the whole thing from start to finsh ready for conversion .
Very handy . -
As you can see from the responses, the answer depends on what you want to do. I primarily use plain VirtualDub as I usually only use it as a visual output for AviSynth. I sometimes use VirtualDubMPEG when analysing MPG/VOB files. The only time I've use VirtualDubMod is when I was preparing my video for the Short Video Contest 2005, to get it into the required xvid/divx format.

what virtualdub should i use if am converting any format to xvid or divx.
-
"any format" is rather vague.
As mentioned before any virtualdub will accept avi input. virutaldubmpeg2 will accept mpeg and vob files.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Personally I find nandub does all I want it to. It accepts vbr mp3 ogg ac3 or wav audio, plus it does virtually everything all vdub modded versions do!
I would suggest you check out Gordianknot rip pack as it contains all the tools you would need for ripping and encoding (except DVDdecripter-you can get it elsewere) to Xvid Divx Mkv Ogm and X264. it is a fantastic tool and well worth learning as the end result is so worth it. -
what virtualdub converts fastest?
and gives the best xvid output without useing avisyth or other tools. -
why do people sometimes prefer virtualdubmod over vdub?
and wich uses more system resorces?
