Can anyone tell me if the 3-D affect would still be present if a 3-D DVD was ripped to an AVI (XVID, DIVX, etc) or to a dvd-r?

The dvd in qeustion is the "Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl"

  2. yea, it should be, provided you dont compress the video TOO much.....dropping it down to a dvd-r would probably be alright.....as would maybe a 2 cd divx of it (or like 1400mb) if you have a divx compatable dvd player, i'd go the divx route.......or xvid....just cuz you can still fit other things on the disc....if not, i'd just dvdr it

Depends on which 3D version of SB&LG you're using.

AFAIK, there is the usual Anaglyph (Red=L/Cyan=Right) and there may be a Field-Sequential (OddField=Left/EvenField=Right) version as well.

Anaglyphs are already hurt when being encoded to MPEG. Mainly, the 4:2:0 color resolution reduction means that the resolving power in the Z-plane is already 1/2 of what it should be. Further re-encoding could ruin it, but a transcoder may be able to not mess with the samples, just change the quantization of them. This might be enough of a space savings.

Field-Sequential discs MUST maintain their field dominance and MUST remain interlaced!
If you transcode, that probably won't be affected, but re-encoding without being very careful about these parameters will completely ruin the 3D.
Obviously, DeInterlacing or saving as MPEG1 (352x240) is no good.
