  1. I noticed that the newer "high-end" card like the GeForce 7800 have H.264 decoding built right into them!

It will be interesting to see what Apple chooses next to go inside there "top-o-the-line" PowerMacs. Should help with those HD playback issues as the new 7800 has "adaptive de-interlacing of high definition content."

    Thoughts?

  2. I'd interested in what Apple will be doing in general to their G5 line in light of the Mactel future. In order to keep selling high end machines for the next year or two, they will need to improve them in some way—graphics cards, faster chips, whatever. They've already removed the low end G5 from their store. While a lot of poeple will be wanting to gt a G5 before they are gone, many others will postpone upgading until they know if their investment will pay off in the long run—business use, etc. The scientific community is very upset because the Mac software they've been using won't be ported to the Mactel.

Video editors might be happy for awhile wioth improved codecs and editing suites, and graphics card such asa the new one mentioned here. But eventually they will want more speed, for rendering, compression, authoring. During the next two years Apple will have to tweek their units to provide competative resources, or risk a major slump in sales.

  3. Since this is just opinion asking ill give mine

While I can see the benefit of APPLE choosing an X86 archecture, they do have alot of things to overcome. Most apple users choose apple because they dont particular like mainstream and they like things that work 99% of the time.

While apple has always had to deal with the price issue, moving to an X86 architecture will deffinetly bring the price down.

One of the most frustrating things for me to deal with when I made the change to APPLE was not being able to upgrade my video card, and the dual G5 coming out right after I picked up a DUAL G4. I can gaurantee you people wont be happy...

eh i coudl type more but i have to leave work, so ignore the rest
    Thanks

  4. Cost. Other than that.... no reason. You can get a 1.8 Ghz Intel to run near a 1.2 Ghz PPC. You will save.

I serious doubt IBM is worried due Apples market share (vs. Sony PS2 and Xbox360 demands) but you will see "high end" PPC systems from Apple for at least 2 more years. We have an IBM PPC P670 and it sweet but... IBM needs to do more.

Steve does not see the progression happening. If it does Steve still looks smart for delivering low cost, XP compatible, Macs
