If you mean ripping a video to your hard drive, should take about 20 minutes. If you mean converting a DVD to SVCD, that's about right for a 400Mhz Celeron. What are you using?

You can almost cut your encode time in half by doubling your RAM to 512MB. I have an older system in the shop like yours (1.4 Athlon) and when I doubled the RAM encoding time dropped almost in half. You can't expect too much from an ancient system such as yours or mine. An upgrade might be something to consider.

my father uses a computer with amd athlon 1.3. Most computers that old...I would be suprised if you can fit 512MB....
256MB is alright...you probably might be able to stick in another 128MB. Go to www.corsairmemory.com and see how much your computer could fit.
You can probably increase the speed of ripping by freeing up you memory, however. You can download a program called memturbo. This will defrag your mem so that it opperates a little faster. You can also optimize the cache size with this program.
You can also hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and close down some of the background programs that you don't really need before ripping. On my computer I found "iPodservice.exe" running in my processes. Hmm....thats funny....I dont even have an iPod.
Still too slow?...Download Ad-aware and spybot to get rid of adware and spyware. That junk will definately eat at your memory. Make sure to virus scan every once in a while too.
Create a system restore point before trying these things...
...Try to optimize you virtual memory. For Win XP.... Right click "My Computer", go to "Properties." Hit the "Advanced" tab. Under "Performance," click "Settings." On the first tab "Vissual Effects," click on "Set for Best Performance." Under "Advanced" tab, for CPU sceduling, set it to "programs." For memory usage, set it to "System Cache"
If you know what you are doing, you can even increase the virtual memory from here. Note that you would be sacrificing Hard Drive space.
Still to slow!?!?....Hit "Start," and "Run" and type in "msconfig"
Click the "startup" tab. From here you can modify what you want loaded on your computer. Stuff like "qttask" , "iTunesHelper" are not necessary.
I hope this helps a little. -
