Ok, I'm going crazy here, I just purchased ImTOO DVD Ripper Platinum. I installed it with no problem. So I put in my DvD (and I've tried several), look it up in the ImTOO, it pulls up the chapter lists all with check marks, and then I've tried Rip All, and Rip Selected. In every case once the first chapter of the actual movie gets to like 99% the thing "Fail"'s. Below is a copy of the log, but needless to say I'm rather frustrated, and very annoyed at this point. I've Emailed the ImTOO support group but haven't heard back yet. Hoping someone here may have experienced a similar problem and can help me out. Thanks in advance.

It could be a problem with newer dvd protections so try rip the dvd to the hdd with latest dvdfab decrypter and then let imtoo convert the dvd on the hdd to avi.

I buy a lot of my DVD's used from Best Buy and the Movie Gallery, could there be some kind of protection that is causing these problems?

Just another update. I downloaded DVDShrink, and DvD Decrypter, and RipIt4Me. I've still been unable to rip the DVD's.

When using the DVD Decrypter I get a bunch of Pack Header Not Found errors although that doesn't seem to stop the process. See below log. I've been trying to read just about everything I can on how to copy my DVD's to my PC and am rather discouraged at this point. Are some DVD's just not able to be copied?

It happens shortly after beginning about 1% into the process. Is there any other software you might need for this stuff to work? It's failing after about 1 minute. I tried again tonight using Pirates of the Caribbean and got the same thing.

Some of the CD's have some minor scratches, but nothing that affects playing the DVD or anything. How clean do they have to be to work?

You'd be surprised at how , even some minor scratches can affect the rip/backup process....

Would you not get a more specific type of error, like a read error or something?

If you use the latest versions DVDFab HD decrypter, it should be able to handle that movie. Probably RipIt4Me would also.

If these are purchased rental discs, they may have some scratches. I would wash them in some warm water and mild dish detergent then dry them to remove oils and fingerprints. Some scratches can be buffed out with a mild abrasive compound. White anti-tartar toothpaste is a cheap material to use. Buff across the disc, not in a circular motion. There are commercial products that may work better. Or some CD/DVD stores will buff them for you at a reasonable price.

Playback will work fine with a lightly scratched disc. The player ignores most minor errors and you may not even notice them on playback. But when backing up a DVD, you need zero errors to get a perfect backup.

But more often the problems with backups are caused by the copy protection. Sony brand DVDs, for one, use a fairly advanced copy protection scheme, so with them you need to use the latest versions of the available decryption programs.

The errors from these newer type of discs may be fairly subtle. They use a combination of methods to make backup difficult.

I've had my first ripping error EVER with the most recent version of DVDFabDecrypter...on a slightly older movie too (Deja Vu). Hang tight....it might be a bug in the program or something. AnyDVD had no problems with the same exact disc.

I also have ImTOO DVD Ripper Platinum, did you look at the movie being rip in your preview screen. Did you place movie content to the output folder. Are you using the lastest version. If the answer to all these is Yes than its the DVD thats in question, Scratch or damage. Try to use one of the sanders that clean DVD but be very careful about the use.

Ok, just to be on the safe side I redownloaded DVDFab, and it was slightly different as the one you link above is platinum but I also get that it’s only a 30 day trial, where the one I had downloaded before never prompted me for a registration code.

I tried this again with Pirates of the Caribbean which looks like it’s about in perfect condition, although perhaps a little dusty on the back. I get the same results, however it did take much longer, it go through 13% of the download or about 4 minutes worth of the download before I got the same error as above. Would that suggest that it’s the CD’s condition?

I’m not sure about most of these questions. So I figured I’d just load it and check out what I was doing. But now it seems every time I load a movie ImTOO start’s analyzing it and then just closes. And doesn’t seem to want to pick up the main film file. However all I have been doing is clicking the button that looks like a CD to select the DVD drive, then it loads the information (except for today it seems) and then I set the output file to the folder I want, and then click either the Rip all (red dot record looking button) or go to file, and then select rip selected while I just have the main movie selected from the list. I know I’m using at least ImTOO DVD Platinum version 4.

I’ve tried both, and neither seems to work, they all seem to fail shortly after starting. Except in the DVD Decrypter I get the Pack Header Error but it continues to work even while getting the errors. Not sure what that means, when I just keep getting the error I stop it manually because I figure it won’t work even if I let it go through the whole process.

They are, Pirates of the Caribbean is in very good to near perfect condition, although perhaps a bit dusty. There are also maybe two very small scratches near the very edge of the CD. If you know a site with very detailed cleaning or scratch repair directions please let me know and I’ll give that a try. Anyone recommend any commercial products that may work? I have a $25.00 gift card for BestBuy in my pocket so maybe I’ll stop by on my lunch break.

Is there an easier way of telling if it’s the CD condition? I wish there were a website that could test the CD and give a better description of the errors I’m getting so I at least knew what the problem was for sure.

Well I’m trying to make sure I have the latest versions of all of the software, and I’ll go back and make sure I have the latest version of ImTOO as well. But I’m positive I have the latest version of the DVD Decrypter now as I followed the link given above and downloaded that, after removing the previous copy I had downloaded just to be safe.

Just as a side note I really do appreciate everyone posting and offering advice/help, I really do hope this thing will start working. I’d feel better if I could at least get one DVD to work. I travel for work and was just hoping to get a few movies on my laptop for trips.

Well, I'm certainly not the expert as some of the others who have responded so far are, but the fact you are getting the same problem on numerous DVD's might indicate that there is a problem with your DVD drive. I recommend you use DVDFABDecrypter and try a different drive and/or computer - you could also try cleaning the one you are using, as well.

    Good luck,

I'll try cleaning both the CD's and the DVD drive on my laptop, as well as try downloading all this to my home PC and see if I have more luck there. How large are these files typically? If I could save them to a flash drive and then copy them to my laptop I could probably live with that.

The main file type in DVDs are VOB files which are not bigger than 1 GB. Since you are working with commercial DVD's there will probably be several VOB files which could total up to around 9 GB.

You can shrink the total file size down and get rid of unwanted features (such as menus, extras, previews, etc.) with DVDShrink (available here under the DVD Rippers tool category) - but again, you will need to transfer files that are a little under or equal to 1 GB in size. There are some good guides on how to use DVDShrink on this site as well.

I just wanted to thank all of you again for your help, I think a large part of the problem was probably the DVD drive on my laptop. As someone suggested I tried this on my home PC and the first two DVD's I tried worked. Now the only problem is the talking doesn't seem to synch with the movie, is this a common problem? Is there a way to fix it? Also is there a way to reduce the file size? They seem to be 2-3GB and was wondering if there were a way to reduce that to maybe 1GB each?

As a note thus far it worked while I was only using ImTOO, I didn't download any of the other suggestions on my home PC yet since ImTOO seemed to work alone there.
