  1. I wasnt sure which section to post this in and Ive never attempted anything like this before. What I want to do is just capture a 2 minute scene from a DVD and then convert it to an .avi. Do i need to rip the entire dvd to my hard drive first or is there just a way to capture the scene I need? The only software I have at the moment is PowerDVD and Nero 6 and DVD shrink. Thank you for any and all help and hope I explained what I needed fully.

You can use dvd shrink. Go to reauthor mode. Select the title you want. Then on the left panel theres a button with two parallel lines - click that and you can select just a chapter or adjust the slider to what you want.

Nope you analyze the disc if you haven't used dvdshrink with it. Then you backup JUST the selection you pick.

??? Vts?? You should have gotten a vob file. Load the vob file into virtualdubmpeg2 and select the codec you want.

  7. Youre right sorry, it is a VOB file but its labeled VTS_01_1. I downloaded and installed VirtualDub but when I open the vob file it says:

MPEG Import Filter: invalid pack position at 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream...

Im not sure whats wrong and sorry if I'm a pain.

No problem. Maybe what you should do is rip the whole chapter. It could be some kind of a read error.

Select the entire chapter and then after you can select just the section you need in virtualdubmepg2 to avi.

  9. I tried the entire chapter and when I opened it I got the same message. I even tried to open the file from the physical dvd in my drive and recieved the same message. Im at a loss now. When I used dvdshrink I even tried compressing the entire movie.

It must be scratched up pretty badly then. Settop players can sometimes read bad discs better than ripping programs (error correction and a alot of stuff I don't know about).

You may be stuck with a bad disc. Is it homemade? Try using the original source again.
