  1. I got a Benq 1640 burner that came with firmware ver. BSGB9J. Do I need to upgrade the firmware or is this one still o.k.? Also, if I do need to update the firmware what version do I need? Ver. BSMB?

Also, my Windows 98 version can't reconize any dvd burner in it. It can only see CD burners. Where can I find a windows 98 driver for the Benq 1640 so that Win 98 can see the burner? If I do install this driver will it mess my firmware version that Benq has installed now in this burner?

you can upgrade the firmware to BSMB or the latest which is BSNB. check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for more information. i use BSMB & BSNB & BSOB on my BENQ 1640 drives with no problems.

no drivers are needed for the BENQ 1640. there should be no problem in installing the burner into your pc. perhaps you need to consider upgrading your operating system cause win98 is old.

  3. I have to look at that site for those other ones you said. Their website I think only has BSMB. So, I guess those others are on that CDfreaks website. Are they legit upgrades or hacked firmware versions?

So, installing more than one firmware update doesn't break the drive?

I'm running a dual boot system right now with WinXP on one partion and Win 98 on the other. The XP system sees and identifies the 1640 but the Win 98 doesn't. It doesn't even see any DVD burner. It only sees CD burners and standard ROM drives. I think I need a 1640 driver so that the 98 side can see the drive not just the XP side. Otherwise I will have to put in a CD burner just for the Win 98 side.

There's no reason to put a win98 driver for the BENQ 1640 drive. Cdfreaks.com is a legitimate website. You can download the firmwares from BENQ's website or from other members in the BENQ FORUM. I suggest you do a lot of reading at the BENQ FORUM. If you want more questions answered then join their forum and post your questions there. You'll have more help from the BENQ FORUM than any other forum or website.

Firmwares are in EXE. file or you can use a flasher program and use a cvt.file. I flash my BENQ 1640 drives all the time using new and old firmware. This is done because of the different dvd media that I use. It doesn't hurt the drive when you flash it as long as you do it correctly. Do some searching on the BENQ FORUM.
