Hi folks,
I would like you to give me some suggestions. The situation is that: I don’t have problems with DVD space I’ve bought some DVD+R DL (A few ones because they are very expensive here in Brazil) and I want to create some DVDs from my .avi internet downloaded movies (these are very special movies that I cannot find in any store). These movies look great even if I zoom and zoom they don’t look noise. I’ve tried out with one of them and I used CCE SP VBR 6 multi-pass, MIN/AVG/MAX 7000/8000/9000 kbps, V/C 25 and no filters. I’ve recorded and watched it my TV. But when I watch it I noticed in some flat areas along the movie some noise blocks especially in dark scenes and in black frames.
1. Is it normal or I’ve to use some other setting to reach better quality?
2. Will CCE 1-pass VBR work better? I ask it because speed could be increased in this mode (Well, I think so). I mean I don’t have space problems I just have to keep my mpeg under DVD-VIDEO specifications. If yes what are the best setting to keep it under specs. Q value? MIN/MAX?
3. Should I use some filtering? In this specific case my movie is a Japanese CG movie (Final Fantasy Advent Children) is it the problem? Could you suggest some filter that could solve or at least reduce that noise? The strategies you could suggest may involve any software you want don’t be limited to CCE because I’ve used VirtualDub-mpeg2 1.6.11 to frameserve to Vegas 6.0 and DebugMode 2.3 to frameserve from Vegas to CCE so if you have some VirtualDub filter idea or so on, please tell me?
Thank you very much. I will really appreciate your help and suggestions.
See you later,
Aeolis

It sounds like you have the same problem as this poster https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=287064
Most downloads have been reduced in size and heavily compressed. When you resize and re-encode, the artifacts caused by compression become more apparent than in the original. The difference in calibration between your TV and your PC also show up things differently.
You could look at the MSU Smart Deblock filter for virtualdub/avisynth. I would also avoid using any of CCEs built-in filters.
Ulitmately, the best solution is not to use over compressed, resolution reduced source material, or accept that you won't get DVD quality from this type of material.Read my blog here.

Hi folks,
Thank you guns1inger. I think you're right I've read the post you showed me and I think that it is the same problem, but and about the other questions, could you take a look on them? I think the situation I've explained have its own particularities.
I still want some ideas from who want to give them (good ideas, please). Thank you all.

I mentioned the MSU Smart Deblocker filter as one possibility. It is an enhanced version of their old deblocker. The old version seemed to work best with VCD sourced footage, however the new version shows promise. There is a post in the News section with links.
Personally, I don't think one-pass VBR is worth the effort. If you are going to do that, you might as well go CBR, where at least you have some surety of the final size. I have never had much luck with so-called Constant Quality modes either, with the results generally being over compressed with very small file sizes. 3 passes in CCE should be more than enough in most cases (I usually use 2, and go to 3 only if the rates start to get low)
I don't understand the frameserving to vegas, only to then frame serve out again to CCE. Why not go straight from VDub to CCE ?Read my blog here.

Hi folks,
Thank you again guns1inger. I frameserve to Vegas because some of that movies are part 1 and part 2 so in Vegas I can precisely and visually make audio and video perfectly sync and I can set the 29.97p frame rate that I use for my DVD-VIDEO because normally that movies are not in 29.97.
Does somebody know or have a suggestion of a VirtualDub filters chain that could help a little?

Hi folks,
I would like to ask you for a filter chain that could reduce or remove the noise I've told you in my first post.
Please read it again to see its particularities and then give me a suggestion.
Could you help me? I want to remove that kind of noise I've told and resize this movie to NTSC 720X480. Please give me an idea of chain don't mind with the filter chain settings I'll do some tests to find better settings just show me a good chain in the best order for this situation and I'll be happy.

have you looked at the filter I suggested ? It is the only half decent deblocker I have found for virtualdub. Nothing else will fix it wihout killing all details. You can read about it here https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=286873

Hi folks,
Yes guns1inger I took a look and it's pretty good, but strangely the old debloker looked better then the new. The new generated too much blurry effect and I don't know how to configure it, is it possible?
Well, I asked for a filter chain so I could have an idea of which is the best filter order, resize and deblock or deblock and resize, for instance. When resize should I use Lanczos or bicubic? These kind of question are the ones that came up to my mind.
Should I use only the deblocker? Or should I create a filter chain that could reduce that told noise without introduce too much of other noises? For example, would be good to use the debloker and after it a sharpener to increase some details lost with the blurry effect of the debloker?
That is what I talking about. Thank you very much guns1inger.

Aeolis
