I am currently using TDA for removing scenes/commercials from recordings transferred from my PVR or VHS captures.

It works well for the most part, but I occasionally have to remove an extra "frame" in order to completely get rid of a commercial.

Are there other affordable (under $100) software programs that I should look at that would give me more accurate cuts?

    Thanks.

You can also upgrade to the PRO version of TDA for about $60. It does frame-accurate editing and overall works a lot smoother. Here is a link to a thread where you can see some of my comments comparing the two versions. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285539. Hope this helps.

  4. You could also try comskip or ShowAnalyzer to find the commercials and automatically remove them using Comclean, comclean 2 with Cuttermaran, or videoredo.
These can usually be run automatically from your capture software, for a totally hands free solution to commercial removal.

In my case, my capture device is a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder.

I take the DVD from the Panny to my computer and edit the VOB files on my PC with TDA.

I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard. It's a bit more expensive, but it does LOTS of stuff (effects). Just the other day I used it to correct an audio sync problem. It comes with a 30 day free trial, too. Once you try it, you'll want to marry it!

Wouldn't that force you to have to re-encoded the "edited" video? In fact, wouldn't any method that allows you cut on anything besides I-frames (i.e., P-frames or B-frames) require re-encoding?

Ah. If it's in mpg format, you can find the commercials, and have them removed automatically. No need to manually edit the file.

The discs end up being the standard MPEG-2 format.

The DMR-ES10 DVD recorder (single disc, no HDD) only allows removal of commercials when using DVD-RAM discs. That's why I use -RW discs and then do the editting work on my PC.

I've been playing with the demo of TDA Pro, and it does exactly what I want (leaves the original DVD VOB files intact, etc.).

I still haven't decided if I'll spring the $$$ for it or keep searching. Given my budget, this may be the only one that fits.

Cuttermaran sounds interesting, but the site indicates that you have to demux the video streams to edit them, and then use TMPGEnc 2.5 for rendering. Sounds like too much hassle for what I want to accomplish.

You can delete the commercials from the middle of the vob files with Vobblanker(free) using the "Cut movie" option

and yes i didnt knew about it even tough i use it quite often.
