I intend to split the cable signal so that I can record a program and watch another on HDTV. One will be connected to a DVD recorder and the other to a cable box (HD). Will there be a noticeable degrading of signal quality? Thanks.

Make sure you get a High Quality Splitter and not one of the cheap ones. Good Quality ones are around 7.00- 10.00 US.
You want at least a 1GHz splitter. 900MHz usually work as well (unless your cable company actually goes above a gig, which I seriously doubt). The 1GHz means that the splitter is designed to pass signals all the way up to 1GHz. -
Thanks, guys. I have a couple of splitters in the garage that I can try. We also have cable connections in the two bedrooms. I wonder how the cable guys did it to minimize signal loss.

if you do start having problems, I would suggest installing a signal booster instead of the splitter. Installing a splitter in my setup made my HD channels inaccessible by my cable box. Installing a signal booster also made significant improvement to the signal that went to my dvd recorder. Basic rule i've found - if basic cable looks better when tuned thru the cable box, then tuned thru the split, basic-cable signal, you should be able to improve the basic signal with a booster.
Also, not sure how much of your setup is done, but if you haven't already, I would suggest running an s-video cable from your cable box to an alternate input on the dvd-recorder (plus sound) - that way you can record digital cable channels that aren't acecssible from the dvd-recorders tuner (if you have them). Also with HD channels, I've noticed that HD channels sent via s-video directly to a dvd-recorder look phenomenal! (yes, even recorded on a non-hd media) - try it if you haven't! -
I have the LiteOn 1101 DVD recorder which does not have S-video interface. The composite connection (RCA) looks good also. I'll try a signal booster if it gives me problem when split. Thanks.
