Don Coscarelli Will Produce the "Phantasm" Remake

LOS ANGELES, CA, March 10, 2005 – New Line Cinema has struck a deal with filmmaker Don Coscarelli to bring a new version of his cult horror film "Phantasm" to the big screen.

Coscarelli will produce the remake of the classic film, which will give a 21st century upgrade to the original 1979 film. The new version of "Phantasm" is being designed as a relaunch of a potential horror franchise.

"Phantasm" revolves around the evil “Tall Man” who moves from small town to small town, turning the local dead into slaves as he prepares for an otherworldly invasion. Armed with his deadly Silver Spheres, an army of shrunken warriors and half-man/half-machine constructs, the Tall Man will stop at nothing short of domination over our space and time. It's up to Mike - a young boy with signs of growing psychic power himself - his older brother Jody, and the local ice cream man to uncover the plan and save our dimension from annihilation.

The project is being overseen at the studio by New Line executives Jeff Katz, George Waud and Stokely Chaffin.

I hope they don't botch it all up like some other remake's

  2. Ahh... the tall man and the flying silver balls.
Classic. I've watched all the films. The plot
is quite interesting and should survive an honest
    attempt at a remake.

    Oh Yeah!!

Well i'm hoping that this is a good thing, Don Coscarelli who did the originals is also doing the remake.
I just hope he don't slaughter them like Speilberg and Lucas did their films
But seeing as he totaly reshooting them and not just adding to and hacking them we will have to see 8)

Well Hopefully he'll add Hayden Christiensen & Natalie Portman, let them deliver some bad dialogue about Naboo, then have the Tall Man hit them with the silver "Ronco Tomato Juicer" balls. Now THAT'S a movie I wanna see!!!

    Later!

    Roger.

It just seems wrong to remake a film that was originally made during my lifetime. I'm not that old.

I have them on LD but many years ago I bought the U.K. PAL region 2 dvd's, well actually the U.K. pressed dvd's are region 1-6 but.... only Phantasm 2 had a diff. actor playing michael, so i always wondered why they never released 2 & 3 in the U.S. on dvd

Here are a couple of pictures for the upcomming Anchor Bay UK Region 2 PAL DVD release of PHANTASM 1 - 4 which includes all 4 films remastered in anamorphic widescreen with a bunch of ultra kewl extras! This is the "special packaging" version ... there will also be a more "traditional" digi-pack release.

I must say though that I have no real faith in the re-make

Yeah, i'm usually not a big fan of remakes, but seeing as Don Coscarelli is the one doing it/them, i'm hoping that makes the odd's better that it will be good

    P.S.
Here are 2 website, both US based, that carry import DVD releases ala this PHANTASM release.

    1.) Xploited Cinema
    2.) Diabolik DVD

I just got the new CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST DVD from Xploited Cinema. Although a USA DVD release this one will not be found in BEST BUY
