Hello,
When i try to drag and drop using Windows Explorer (WinXP Ed) a .avi media file onto my external dvd writer the progress box is displayed with the estimated time of completion, and Windows tells me that i have files that need to be written to. As you might expect...
When the whole process has finished, and i double-click the balloon to open up the new window where the files should be displayed and where i can write the files to dvd, there are no files visible and there is no option to the write files to the dvd.
I've used this option in the past to drag-and-drop files on cd and it worked everytime, not once did i have a problem. I read somewhere on the net that Windows can only drag-and-drop for Cd's and can not do the same for dvd's...and you would need roxio drag-and-drop or InCD etc.
I also get this error message that i used to get before in my earlier attempts when i tried to even attempt a drag and drop, it says that windows cannot copy file, and i can skip, or retry or cancel, and everytime i retry the error message keeps repeating. So what i did was to delete Nero, and like i have said - that at least lets me drag and drop and receive the progress bar now.
Well, can someone who has had similar problems or has extensive knowledge in matters such as this, please post a reply.
I've tried right clicking on the drive and from its properties checking the enable option, that hasnt worked.
So, Thanks in advance for any replies.

why not just use nero?
it works perfectly for me when backing up avi or any data to DVD+R"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

I've already tried using nero6 to burn .avi media files onto cd using Nero Express as data, with my external dvd writer, and the file was there on cd, but i couldnt access it, it just would not open, i tried to open it with realPlayer, divX, win Media Player it was like none of the file's data was burnt.
I also used burning ROM to attempt a drag and drop, this time onto DVD, but i cant remember what the error message was, it might of been, "the G: drive is not accessible". So im having real problems with using this damn writer, but it works i've used it to burn MPEG2 dvd compliant files onto DVD, so no doubt it works.
I've also had problems with erasing re-writable dvd's, whichi still havent been able to sort out with this writer, but i want to focus on this subject.
Anyone for suggestions? -
As for the windows explorer part, Windows does not natively support drag and drop to DVD media (DVD burning).
To trouble shoot, we will need some more information, as it could be any number of issues.
- Do the .avi files play ok from your hard drive?
- What DVD-Writer do you have (Brand/model/firmware/USB or Firewire)?
- What version of Nero are you using? (open nero StartSmart -> Click the Flaming Nero Button/text to bring up the version information) I am still using 6.3.1.25 (it has been stable for me)
- Have you tried using Nero Burning ROM (not express)?
- Did you finalize the disc (not sure if this would have any effect).
Knowing what specific error messages came up could provide a big clue, if they are long, next time press [alt]-PrtScrn to take a screen shot and paste it into ms paint, save the file as a .png file then post upload it here in a post.
Things you could try:
- Update your drives firmware (if you need help identifying your drive the forums of www.cdfreaks.com is a great place to start.) - Note that incorrectly flashing your drive can render it useless, so you want to make sure you flash it with the correct firmware.
- Update Nero (mabey even uninstall, run nero's cleanup tool from their support site, and do a fresh install).
hope this was of some help. Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
AVIs are just recorded as data on a DVD. Nero should do that with DVD-ROM ISO mode. Your problem may be related to using an external DVD drive, maybe a interface problem.
You could use Nero Clean to get rid of Nero remnants and install again. Nero has always worked for me burning DVD or CD data discs on many systems. InCD can cause problems, I don't recommend installing it. In fact, if you can, just install the minimal version of Nero if it will let you. A lot less problems that way.
But I suspect most any burning program may have your same problems. It may be more related to other software on your system or driver problems than the burning program itself. -
- Do the .avi files play ok from your hard drive?
Answer: Yes, the .avi files perfectly fine, no problems whatsoever.
- What DVD-Writer do you have (Brand/model/firmware/USB or Firewire)?
Answer: I have a Freecom Fx50...

Answer: I have deleted Nero but i had Nero v6.6.0.16
- Have you tried using Nero Burning ROM (not express)?
Answer: Yes but i get some error message...cant remember exactly, but i think it might of been "G: drive is not accessible".

Answer: Yes

I've just realised i forgot to crop the pictures, but doesnt matter, wont make any difference.
thanks guys for helping to sort out this problem im having, its much appreciated. -
well, as for the last error "using(NeroExpress)ToBurnAsData.PNG"
You are trying to put to much data onto a DVD. 4,543 MB when only 4,482 MB are available (unless your drive supports overburning, which is rare for DVD drives, and I am unsure how much one can gain by overburning a DVD). 4543 - 4482 = 61 MB over the specified limit of a recordable DVD.
Which connection are you using? USB or FireWire? it might be worth a shot to try the alternte connection type if you have not.
Check to see if there is a firmware upgrade:
http://www.freecom.com/firmware.asp?form1=true&form2=true&serie=12600&Manufactures=12600
(check device manager to see what the drive is recognized as, in order to choose the correct firmware).
Concerning "(ErrorMessage)Drag&DropUsingWinExplorer.PNG":
Again, Windows does NOT natively support Drag-and-Drop Burning to DVDs (only CDs) via Windows Explorer. If you want this function you will have to install packet writing software, such as Nero INCD.
I'm affraid I won't be of much more help, I know windows has some quirks with external USB devices that can crop up. If you can't find the help you need here, you might also give a shout at http://club.cdfreaks.com the folks there are very knowledgable on hardware/software issues (that is the focus there, where here it is more video related, though both are covered). Some people say dog is mans best friend. I used VSO CopyToDVD to drag and drop the folder, and it did go over the limit because of the last file. So, i've managed to backup what i had on the hd and saved 10gb.
but, yeah, i do appreciate what you had to say, very helpful if i was still stuck.
