  1. Just wondering....I recently installed Winamp because i read it was a very good media player. I must have told it to use Winamp as the default player, but I was surprised whem all my audio files now show as "Winamp Media File" in MS eplorer instead of MP3 or WAV or whatever they were. I don't know if the ctual file structure has been changed, but i want them to appear as they used to. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

That's because the file description for the file extension mp3 (and wav) was changed by the WinAmp installer. Nothing else has been done to your system beyond that.

You can change it if you open any folder, select Folder options from the Tools menu.
Then click on the FileTypes tab, select the extension whos description you don't like, click the Advaced button, and enter whatever description you like for that file extension.
While you're at it, make sure the option "Hide extension for known file types" under the View tab is not checked.

  3. Thanks, that worked fine. however, I THINK I screwed up on my MP3 files as the now have wav as file type - I'll go back and try to re-name that group somehow.

I HATE when any program takes control so much! Just play my files!!! Don't take over all media on my machine!

Well, the std description for most audio / video files (mp3, wav, AVI & cetera) is "Windows Media File" - (as they by default mostly are associated with WMP) Not much better IMO. But this is std procedure in Windows. You are usually presented with the option to associate certain file types for a player or editor you're installing, and for those you check/don't uncheck, you usually end up with a description telling you it's like a "Microsoft Office Word document" instead of "DOC file"
