No need to double post. Google philips+dvd8631
This drive has issues that are both software (Sonic) and hardware related. Try a re-boot before burning. Uninstall, then re-install Sonic. Install the latest version of Nero www.ahead.de and see if it will recognize the disc. Are the problem??? discs DVD+R or DVD-R? Some have had trouble with this drive burning DVD-R media - none with DVD-R.

You may have a warranty issue after checking the re-boot and software issues out.

I worked for 9 months with a problematic Plextor drive - in the end a firmware update fixed everything. Yes, the tech support guys had me uninstalling and re-installing burning software, etc.. The funny thing was, I told them I suspected the drive's firmware was the problem - since I had another burner in the machine that burned the same media without a hitch. After the firmware update, I pulled "bad" media out and was able to get a full burn without an issue.
