  1. Well, another disappointing outcome.

I really start to hate this.

    These are my steps:
Created projects using PPRO and ENCORE.
    Created a DVD folder
Made an image of the folder and burned the DVD using Benq DW1640 and the ImgBurn at 4x on the Verbatim Datalife DVD-R.
Ran the DVD test using Nero Test Drive tools; the results of the test here:

    General Information
    Drive: BENQ DVD DD DW1640
    Firmware: BSMB
    Disc: DVD-R (MCC 02RG20)
    Selected speed: 6 X
    PI errors
    Maximum: 8
    Average: 1.40
    Total: 10600
    PI failures
    Maximum: 5
    Average: 0.02
    Total: 224
    PO failures: 0
    Jitter

    Average: 6.87 %
    Scanning Statistics
    Elapsed time: 12:47
    Number of samples: 17746
    Average scanning interval: 8.00 ECC
    Glitches removed: 0

Played the DVD on my JVC player; DVD plays good.
Played the DVD on client’s Marantz 4200; DVD did not play.
Played the DVD on client’s Panasonic RV20; DVD did not play.

My next step is to try TY DVD+R and burn it using Nero.

    Any other suggestions?

Also does Nero support Bitsetting and if yes where do I set it to -rom for the DVD+Rs.

    Thanks

Don't use the wizard in Nero. And then on one of the screens is a checkbox for booktype to be changed at burn.

YUDEN DVD+R media with a booktype change is a good enxt step.

Although, I must say, if a MCC disc will not work on a player, and we're sure the data is 100% compliant to DVD spec, then the player may simply not play burned discs.

  3. I am not going to use the wizaed. Unless there is a better way. I am going to use the NERO Burning Rom and select DVD-Video. Copy the file into the VIDEO_TS folder and burn it that way.

Maybe you should skip the image process this time. Just use the DVD-Video template in Nero.

Although, I should note, Nero is not the best method either. I have issues with Nero burning compliant.

We also cannot eliminate the burner as the issue. For as many fans as BenQ has (mostly for "testing" moreso than burn quality), it's not eh best drive. Certain drives are known to do odd things, little quirks, that would make a disc not play when it normally would. I have that issue on my BTC dirves with certain media.

Discs are only like 30-40 cents. Just try a number of burner-media-software combos, using good media, and something should eventually work. Keep at the MCC and YUDEN discs. If those don't work, nothing will.

  5. Please don't tell me that Benq DW1640 is a bad burner. I just got it. I used to have the Plextor 708A and was looking to the new one. I have read that Plextors are the same as Benq but better. I read the reviews on www.cdfreaks.com, where they geve good reviews for it.

Also will the DVD ISO-UFD setting in NERO batter than the DVD-Video or that does not matter?

    Thanks

My old BenQ does burn +R discs faster than -R discs....but it burns both discs equally well. BenQ's are NOT bad burners....and I don't use Nero. I use DVDDecrypter to burn .ISO images and I use Prassi Ones to burn VIDEO_TS folders.

Also the Big Name Brand Name DVD Players are the WORST for playing recordable media.

  7. Not sure if I am going to try it, but does Prassi Ones supports bitsetting booktype of -rom?

    Nope....DVDDecrypter does for +R.
Never tried -R bitsetting....don't know much about it actually.

You can't do bitsetting on a dvd-r ... it only works on +r ... dvd-r are read as dvd-rom by default

Also note .... Marantz 4200 only plays DVD-R ... and the Panasonic RV20 will only play DVD+R

  11. I tried the DVD-R on Marantz 4200. It did not played. Not sure why. Maybe it is an ImgBurn problem. I used DVD Descypter, but I thought it was kind of replaced with ImgBurn. Also I was going to use bitsetting with DVD+R.

So I still have couple of questions.

    1. What is better for burning the DVDs in NERO: DVD-Video or DVD ISO/UDF?

    2. When I looked at the Marantz page and Panasonic RV20 page both were able to play either kind.
Links to DVD Players are here:
    Marantz 4200
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=Marantz+4200&Submit=Search&Search=Search&d...y=Name&hits=25

    Panasonic RV200
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers?DVDname=Panasonic+RV20&Submit=Search&Search=Search...y=Name&hits=25

So if I use TY DVD+R with DVD-ROM booktype, it will play on the Panasonic but not on Marantz?

    3. Any ideas why Verbatim DVD-R burned with ImgBurn and Benq DW1640 did not play on Marantz?

i also checked the pages for your players ... problem was that your orignal post stated panasonic RV20 (which only plays +r) ... whereas your last post says its a RV200 (a newer model that should play both)

A dvd+r that has been bitset to dvd-rom may well play on the marantz ... as the player will see the disk as a dvd-rom and not as a dvd+r...try it and see

as for the nero question ... i don't use nero so i can't help ... try using recordnow max or tda

  13. I meant DV20.

However, I think the underlying problem is ImgBurn and possible DVD Decrypter. I have a portable Toshiba DVD SDP2500 player. I tried to play the discs which were burned using ImgBurn and it would not play them at all. I then burned the DVD using Nero Burning Rom using the DVD-Video template and Toshiba DVD player played them w/o any problems. I used the same Verbatim DataLife discs as mentioned in the first post.

In the past I burned couple of Verbatim DataLife DVDs using the DVD Decrypter and the person complained that it would not play on his Sony DVD player. I am thinking it is the same problem as ImgBurn.

Today I am going to burn TY DVD+R with –ROM booktype using the ImgBurn and Nero Burning Rom and see if I have the same problem.

The list over to the left doesn't say too much about either of the DVD players with which you seem to be having problems. However, the list does *seem* to indicate that they both seem to have some problems with DVD-R.
I might suspect that your two players might just have a problem with that particular brand of DVD-R.
You might try taking the troublesome disk to an electronics store and see how it plays in several brands of DVD players.

  15. I somewhat confirmed my suspicion.

Using the Benq WD1640, NERO Burning Rom and DVD-Video project, I burned 3 DVDs all together. Two of them were Verbatim DataLife DVD-R and one was TY DVD+R (DVD+R was burned using DVD-ROM booktype).

The Panasonic RV20 played all 3 DVDs
The Marantz 4200 played only two: one of the Verbatim DVD-R and the TY DVD+R.

What puzzles me is why the other Verbatim DVD-R did not play in Marantz?

Both Verbatims were burned the same way, but had different content.

I've seen burners do that before to MXL, TDK, TY, and MCC media. The burn is perfect, but the player barfs. You can make two identical burns, and one plays and one does not. It's a player issue.

  17. Premiere Pro is a bugfest, Nero 6 blows chunks, and as Smurf points out, sometimes you just get bad burns. RecordNow is IMHO a much better burning app than Nero 6. If you can, go back to Nero 5.5.X (you'll have to put on a new ASPI layer dll to get it to work with Win 2K/XP) or dump Nero 6/7 for RecordNow 6/7.

The Benq is not a bad burner, though it's far from the best. The Pioneers and LiteOns are probably the best burners out there right now. But I must agree with Smurf that Nero Burning Rom in the 6 or 7 versions has compliance issues. I suspect it's a UDF 1.0.2 vs 1.0.5 or 1.2.0 problem, but either way Nero is not the best program to use to burn discs. DVDDecrypter and RecordNow are in my experience much better, produce a far greater percentage of universally compliant discs, and don't suffers the bugs of the post-5.5.X Nero software.

When these kiinds of things happen it's usually either a burning or authoring problem, or a media/DVD player problem. Some standalone players just don't like some media. But it's usually more likely to be an issue with burning or authoring software. Alas, even today, most of the DVD burning and authoring software is still crapware. DVDLab Pro has issues creating compliant discs images/title sets, Nero has issues burning compliant discs. Encore I would not recommend if you want maximally compliant discs.

The best authoring apps for universal compliant discs in my experience are DVD Maestro, SpruceUp and Ulead DVD Workshop 2. The best burning apps for universal compliant discs in my experience are RecordNow and DVDDecrypter.

  18. I appreciate everybody’s input. However, one has stick with what works. There are thousands of members on this forum and each has its own experience.

I have never burned with Nero before, however I was burning with DVDDecrypter and now the ImgBurn, and those DVDs would play only on 1 out of 5 players. Once I burned the same DVDs using NERO, they played on all the players. Were the DVD complent or not? I do not know. Does it matter if it works? One thing for sure, I am not going to use either DVDDecrypter or ImgBurn.

I am also not really sure if RecordNow is good either. The version I have does not have any DVD projects at all.

RecordNow 4.5 or 4.6 is great. Follow the guide:
