hi. i have an avi about 25 minutes long and about 240mb. the quality is outstanding. i also have some subtitles in both srt, ssa format. my problem is i need a program i can hardcode the subtitles with and at the same time, keep the quality of it. can anyone tell me what program to use and how to keep the quality. i used virtualdub and it worked but the avi cam out 150mb when i saved it as xvid and even less when i saved it as divx. maybe im not setting the settings right or maybe im not using the best program. can u guys show me the way. also when i do get the subs done, can i burn it just like it is so i can watch it in my dvd. TY in advance.

  2. Use VirtualDub, Xvid codec, single pass, Quantization mode, with a target quantizer of 2 or 3.

Ok i did exactly what u said and bingo. the original was about 250mb and when i did it your way, it came out to be 201mb and i impressed because the outcome look as good if not better than the original. TY very much. i really appriciate it.

  5. Glad to hear it worked out. At Q=2 the result will be almost identical to the source. At Q=3 there will be a little macroblocking but you won't notice at normal playback speeds.

Speaking of macroblocking, your source probably has some (you may have to look at enlarged still frames to really see it). Adding MSU's Deblocking filter (before adding subtitles in the filter chain) will repair a lot of it. That might get you even better results.

  7. Just download the MSU Deblocking filter:

    http://www.compression.ru/video/deblocking/index_en.html

and put the vdf file in VirtaulDub's plugins folder.

Use Video -> Filters... -> Add... to add the filter before any other filters. The default settings are usualy fine (high quality, U deblock, V deblock). Otherwise the procedure is the same as you used before.

If your DVD player can't play avi (divx) then you have to convert to mpeg2 and author a dvd. If you only have a cd writer then you can make vcd or svcd.

Also encoding at a low fixed quant could lead to bitrate spikes on a player that can play MPEG4/AVI's.
