I could backup recordings to a vcr or buy a dvd recorder. My other option is to get a nic card and use the hacks to extract the video off the tivo. I want someones opinion what option is better. extract or record.
I have a series 1 just using it as a vcr. If do extract the video off the tivo how hard is it.

Extract - by a LONG shot. Recording would convert the digital data to analog, then, if you were to convert to DVD, back to digital.
There are plenty of people who "hack" their machines to extract the tivo MPG2 files, and there are sites that explain just how to do it. So, exactly how hard it would be would depend on your "hacking" skill level.ICBM target coordinates:
