Damn....
I had an interview with a local TV station, Hope they don't visit here, and I couldn't believe all the different systems they are running. It didn't scare me or anything, but you'd think some company would of come out with a set of software packages that would all integrate when you needed them too. I just about died when they asked if I know AS400 stuff....Ummmmm wasn't that based only on token ring? Then they had a problem with a signal coming from the transmitterer.......OK we're going to bounce the signal from here to a remote truck...then to a another remote. to the main dish and back again. Can we do that with an audio switcher?
I hope I get the job!!!!! Sounds like fun
BTW, the guy that did the interview.....He was the job....Bet he has a friend that gets the job

twinax was the main networking cable used with the as400.
all there dumb terminals could go of one run that could be 2K long.
oh i used to have fun with that stuff. including nearly falling through the rof diagnosing problems one day.

A single software package? If It's anything like the facility where I work, that's nothing but a pipe-dream. Everything is piece-meal and hand-me-downs. And I work at an O & O.
Good Luck with the job hunt, BTW. -
Well most of the stuff they use for brocasting and editing is Avid and EMS(I think that's what he called it) The AS400 is used for traffic control and logging the broadcast for advertisers and stuff. I think they have a total of 6 different systems that they integrate
BTW, the guys boss just called me back and asked a few questions. How much do I want in salary, and do I have any video (Non linear) editing experience. I told him that I create my own edited DVDs and stuff from DV cams and Hi8 cams. I could hear his eyebrow go up. Lets hope the other 2 people he was calling don't know how to edit DV with Avid or Premier
I should know if I got the job in the next few days <fingers crossed> -
Dang, a 3rd call back and Tomorrow is a phone interview with one of their corp guru's. He even told me the guy would ask me questions that I most likely wouldn't be able to answer, just to find out what my demeanor was like. If I pass this one, then there is yet one more interview over lunch.
He told me I was up against one other person
maybe I can chage the thread title to "Hey I got a nice job finaly" -
Good Luck just make sure you have google up for any real hard questions....

I don't know the rate in your area. I seem to remember a broadcasting site where they posted the going rates for broadcast techs by state. Bodyslide is right, do some Googling and you might find out a lot.
Good Luck Stiltman!!!!! -
Just make sure to slip in some porn when TV shows get boring. It's good for ratings.

The head honcos want us to be totally tapeless too, but I can't see that happening in the foreseeable future. Digital stuff may be cheaper, but analog is so much more reliable. When the servers crash (once or twice per month), thank God we have tape backups running. Part of the problem is management, they have no concept of how to do things properly --- they always want it done cheaper, and that leads to problems. Hopefully you'll have better luck at your place. -
No...No
I meant totaly tapeless as in the cameras and stuff. The servers have both DLT and DDS4 in them. I do have to rebuild them and add a few more drives to the RAID, but I will not forsake tapes. That is, unless they can afford a full EMC 20 HDD drive array, but I know that's not gonna happen.
BTW, they are installing a new Avid system from start to finish, that's one of the reasons the other guy is leaving. He doesn't want to learn a whole new system again. I said bring it on. The station is like owned by the 5th largest company in the states. I checked and they have had a few white papers done by MS.....Problem is, I don't agree with the way they did it. Plus I don't agree with with their choise of email addresses, and I could go on and on......
The corp people are gonna know my name in a few months!!! 60day probation of course, and they'll know what security on the systems is all about... -
Well Stilt, congratulations! I'm glad you've got a job in an area where you're evidently keen. You know what they say: if you like your job, you won't work a single day. I hope it all goes really well for you!

OK these guys/gals have 3 white papers on Microsofts website. In my first hour there, I told them 4 ways I could hack their system.....worst being wireless, least being user IDs are the same as their email addies. -
stiltman, do not try and do too much or else they will expected you to
to really work for your paycheck..........
