  1. I authored 3 video clips (mpeg2, 720 x 480) onto a dvd with TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6. Before I even burned it onto a dvd I previewed the output with WinDVD and everything played and worked fine (audio & video). When I burned onto a dvd and played it on my Pioneer DV363 I can view all the videos with menus and all, but I hear no audio at all. And since I also own another older Pioneer dvd player (can't remember the model number) it plays fine audio & video.

What could be the problem? I don't think it's the newer model because everything I've burned till now has played fine and dandy. Any suggestions? TIA

My guess would be the audio format isn't recognised in the new player. What format was your audio, AC3, MP2,etc?

  3. I'm sure its Mpeg II around 384kbps 48000Hz.

So here is where I'm a little confused, how come my older Pioneer player (one of the early ones) plays the dvd video and audio ok. And also I even authored the same 3 videos on another program (Easy CD & DVD Creator 6) and the dvd played well audio & video on the newer Pioneer DV363.

  4. This might be a stupid question.

Have you checked the Audio Setup on the DVD player?

  5. any question is never a stupid question in my book.

I didn't even bother checking that. The reason why is because ever since I bought my dvd player everything I've burned from vcd all the way to another full authored dvd with the same 3 video files (thru Easy CD & DVD Creator 6) played fine with no problems. But I'm gonna take a look at that when I go home for lunch.

Do you think I have to convert my MPEG II audio to AC-3? I hope not because I didn't have to do that with Easy CD & DVD.

Strictly speaking, in the US (NTSC) the DVD spec does not allow Mpeg1-Layer2 as the only audio track. One audio track must have DD or PCM Audio.
All players should be capable of playing Mpeg1-Layer2 because it is a supported secondary audio spec, but if the manufacturer sticks strictly to spec, and your DVD only has MP2 audio it shouldn't play the audio.
Having said that, many manufacturers do not hold that strictly to the spec, and sometimes follow it differently between different models of players.
On top of all that, it's also possible that your player may see something on one disk that makes it think there is an audio track with DD or PCM audio and will play the MP2 audio even if it's the only real audio track there is (I saw this once on a friends player that ordinarily wouldn't play MP2, but one disk that we verified only had MP2 audio played fine). In other words, if you only use MP2 for audio, it's a crapshoot on whether it will play on any given player.

  7. thanks for the explanation...but now that I think about it more it could be Mpeg1-Layer2. I go to lunch in about 30min so I will verify that. So if it is Layer2 and it still doesn't play is there any other solution or a way around it?

Or use a different player that is a little looser with the specs.
Sorry, I just don't think there's anything you can do with that disk to get it to play in a player that doesn't support it.

  9. well guess what? I should of done what JEEPn suggested. I went home and went into the Initial Settings of the dvd player and low and behold the MPEG Out under Digital Audio Out was set to MPEG instead of MPEG > PCM. And after the change the audio works on my authored dvd. woohoo!!!

Now here is another question, from reading my dvd manual under the MPEG Out setting it states that the default setting is MPEG > PCM. And the reason I had it set to MPEG only was because I'm using one of the digital outputs. Should I leave it as MPEG > PCM or should I just make that change anytime I play an authored dvd.

Thanks again for all your help and posts guys!
