I have an HP laptop. AMD anthlon Mobile XP2500+(1.8ghz). I noticed that in COntrol Panel > System under the system info section it shows the above computer info but shows 516mhz. sometimes it shows the 516mhz then sometimes the 1.8ghz. Is there a setting to make it perform at the 1.8ghz all the time?

Not 100% sure but I think those laptops step down the CPU to whatever it needs to conserve battery power.

thecoalman is correct, but it shouldn't drop down that slow. If you want to eliminate that feature, go to Control Panel >Power Options > and change the Power Scheme to 'Home//Office Desk'. As long a you plan to run on external power this will work. For battery use, though, it won't run too long.
EDIT: My HP laptop has been running a little slow recently and after I typed the above, I checked it. It was set at Portable/Laptop. I guess I need to check it myself once in a while. -
yeah mine is set at portable/laptop. When the majority of the time i have the power supply hooked up anyway.
