  1. My computer says this.

The USB composite device is a HI-SPEED USB DEVICE and will not function at reduce speed when pluged into a Non HI-SPEED USB DEVICE

    Then it says Recommendation

You must add a HI-SPEED USB Host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance.

So does that mean i can buy something for the laptop??

    Thanks

Well, maybe. What you need is a card that supports the USB 2.0 spec. Do you have a spare slot in your laptop?

You're talking about external PCMCIA slots. I'm talking about internal card slots.

  7. While you're at it you might look at some combo cards with USB2 and Firewire. It's more expensive at first, but cheaper in the long run if you ever need Firerwire.

    This is just one example:

The PC cards recommended above are what you want. Your laptop has no "internal" support for USB2.

I guess that laptops no longer have internal slots for adding stuff like this. Your only remaining option is to use the external PCMCIA slots.

    Yes.

Better than what? If you're capturing now via USB 1.1 at a low frame size, low frame rate, and/or low bitrate then the switch to USB 2 will allow for larger frame sizes, higher frame rates, and/or higher bitrates -- better captures.

  14. All right

    Thanks

Maybe this is the problem cause with the 1.1 the picture quality is REALLY bad.

I hope this will fix the problem

O ya and will something like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6307427&type=product&id=1074787928079

    Be good?

Most usb devices are backward compatable to usb 1.1, they just do not give full performance capabilities.

My ADS InstantDvd 2.0 will auto detect if it is pluged into usb 1 or usb2 and limit the capture properties accordingly. With only usb1 I can capture full D1 at up to 4mb/s (which is all I ever use anyway) but will go up to 15 mb/s with usb2

The above assumes that the rest of your system can handle the data flow. Do a bench speed test on your hard drive to determine if it can handle the sustained read/write that you are looking for. For myself, using an older pc or laptop that did not have adequte bus speed I used the ADS IDVD=2 connected to a usb-1 port and captured to an external hard disk keeping my capture bitrate below 4mb/s

  16. Ok, I really wish i knew what you just said... but i didnt

    Ok...

But i just want one, dont i?

I just want a GOOD one that will work my my laptop.

I need one from a local store like Bestbuy or CompUSA

  17. USB 2.0 is a pretty mature technology. There's not much difference between different brand cards. Just buy a cheap one from a local store -- if it doesn't work you can return it.

Not that PCMCIA is also called PC CARD.

  18. So if i go to bestbuy i ask for a Pc Card?

Sometimes there is only room for one card at a time, even with two slots. If you don't need to use the wireless card at the same time as the USB, then no problem either way.

    @ brav0568

By "laggy" ..am I correct to assume you mean, "sluggish" performance ??
If this is video capturing, they you are probably out of luck with
performance, because your USB device (that you connected to)

(ie, say it was a capture gizmo) is probably USB 1.x speed.

Getting a USB 2.0 card will not speed up a USB 1.x device.
I have a USB 1.x digital camera that I have been playing with this past
week. I have a USB 1.x/2.x onboard (though, bad performance) and
a dedicated USB 2.0 I/O card I picked up at CompUSA for $39 bucks.

    Anyways..

When I connect my device (digital camera) to my USB 2.0 card, it
bumps down to USB 1.x performance. The reason for this, is because
the camera is only capable of 1.x speed. That's it. So, weather
you have 2x, 10x, 1000x USB speed, will not make your (shall I say)
    hardware USB device go faster

I'm assuming that your device is USB 1.x, and connected to a USB 2.0
    port.

Can I guess at your current situation setup ??

    You have a USB cam

I'm thinking about checking out a $30 dollar USB cam (to replace
my "free" digital camera) for a USB 2.0 camera. That *should*
give me the speed I am looking for. I'm planning on picking one
    up this evening

fwiw.. if intereste, I'll keep you posted of the results. USB
devices should work (performance 'wise) even in laptops too.

I think he wants to play games on the XBox through the USB capture device to the laptop monitor. I think he is in big trouble and will be quickly defeated.

    Darwin applies to latency too.

Ya, I wanna play it on my laptop.

    Im defeted?

  25. There's no way around the lag between the Xbox and the computer display. The capture device has to capture a full frame before it can send it to the computer. Then the computer probably buffers a few frames before it displays them.

Split the video signal from the Xbox -- run one to the capture box, one to a TV. Play the game on the TV while capturing on the computer.

  26. Thats what im doing right now, but if i wanna capture the xbox i have to switch it to the other thing...
