  1. When I'm copying a commercial-sized DVD (8.5GB) to my hard disk using DVDShrink, and I have told it to do nothing to the data, and not compress it, is STILL says "encoding" when ripping the disk.

Is it still processing the data, or just copying it? What's going on there?

I seem to recall having done this before, and getting a loss in quality, even though I have told DVDShrink I don't want it to do ANYTHING but rip the data.

  2. Also, in general, what can I use to make an exact duplicate of a commercial-sized DVD to a dual-layer disc, retaining all the quality of the original? I am using DVD Region-CSS Free for removing all protections, so what do I need to do? Can I just use Nero DVD-DVD copying to make an exact copy? Or is there an even better way?

DVDDecrypter ISO Read then ISO Write is one of the more preferred methods AFAIK. A complete 1:1 copy, guaranteed.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. If you're set to "No compression", DVDShrink is not transcoding, just copying. Best way to do what you ask is with DVDDecrypter. ISO Read -> ISO Write. Exact copy, layer break and all. Removing PUOs should have no effect on the layer break, should you wish to remove them. Good luck.

[EDIT] Eh, beat me to it. :P
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  5. Thanks folks! Right now, I'm still using Nero DVD->DVD copy, and it *seems* to be working (altho' it's been flaky in the past). The next DVD I'll try what you suggest with DVDDecrypter.

Do you think any harm is done by having DVD Region & CSS-Free active while using DVDDecrypter? Since DVD Region & CSS-Free does it's own decrypting, macrovision removal, etc. etc., DVDDecrypter has no work to do, really, I would think. True?
