The item description doesn't really give enough information to make a judgement. You could ask the seller what the media code is but the chances are s/he wont know (or care). I don't know what media prices are like in the US, but at about £12 / 100 disks these are very cheap by UK standards (excluding the expensive p&p). So would guess these are probably not the best.
Unfortunately you usually get what you pay for

The going sale rate for quality discs right now is $40 - $50. I just caught some TDK's at CompUsa for $17.95 for a 50 pack and considered it a good deal. I've seen several ads for 50 packs of Verbatim and Memorex for around $20 - $22. I would say $15 for 100 is a major red flag. Then again, it depends on what you use them for and how critical the data is. Even if the failure rate is 30 - 50% it might be OK moneywise. I just don't like the frustration of a failed burn, or the risk that when I need the backup - it won't play.

  4. I wouldn't trust them. The seller completely omits the brand of disc. That tells me that the seller is either incompetent or is trying to sell crappy discs.

  5. Don't forget that he wants another $15 for shipping, doubling the price.

  6. These disc are manufactured with the lasted DVD manufacturing technology
Mmm 8x not the latest by any means.... Not the lasted either....
Also no one has ever proved these disk will last 100 years.....
If they cant or wont say the brand or the dye they are made with only one thing to do... AVOID
    Not bothered by small problems...

  7. I would just go to CompUSA where they have a sale for 8X TDK discs at $18 for 100 either DVD-R or DVD+R.

I wouldn't go to compUSA, circuit city, or bestbuy if you paid me. Just too much low end crap. Also, when they're packaged like that, several disks on both the top and bottom get scratched so you lose 10. Why buy those when you can get the best for less?

PS - What's weird about eBay is that everybody just blindly goes there without checking the internet first.

I avoid buying for ebay. Too many fakes and too many hidden charges.

This one is a perfect example, hidden charge within the postage costs.

    Unknown junk on eBay. Avoid.
I also do not understand everybody's hard-on with eBay. It's fine for collectibles or used goods, but not for bargains or new items.

Too many good deals at the local computer parts warehouse. I go to Microcenter, real cheap no-names but, I've been getting the Philips with realtek die 50 for $20. They work real good in my DVD players and super in the Xbox. Hard to beat at less than 50 cents each.

  16. $16.95 plus $14.95 shipping is $31.90 total for unknown media. I just paid $33.93 including shipping for 100 pack of genuine TY dvd-r which includes $2.06 tax. Minus the tax it is $31.87.

There have been three bad burns out of 400 with real TY.

Everything on this thread has been said countless times before but for those new to burning it's no doubt valuable information. The bottom line today is that a lot has changed from a couple of years ago. Back then blanks were relatively expensive and the recorders were not as sophisticated (speed control, buffer utilization). People on this forum were recommending burn speeds of 1X or 2X as a safety precaution. Getting quality blanks (even from the major manufacturers) wasn't easy and once you found a "match" for your recorder the advice was to never change.

Fast forward. Over the last 18 months I've burned a thousand or so discs using Verbatim, TDK, Fuji, Maxell, and Memorex. Probably 3 or 4 failures. It just isn't much of an issue anymore with name brands particularly at burn speeds of 4X - 8X (or even 12X). My personal guidelines are:

    1. Buy name brand
    2. Get the highest speed possible without paying a premium (8X seems a good compromise).
    3. Don't pay list price but don't sweat a buck or two
    4. Try to support local businesses if you can. They pax taxes in your community and hire local people.

There isn't any "best brand", "best store" or "best website". There's what works for you and fits your budget and shopping convenience. When it moves beyond that it becomes a "religion" usually based on belief instead of fact.

Point to note: If a particular brand is more expensive, it does not mean it is better. Avoid high street stores, thats where you will find the worst media at the most expensive prices (is the case here in the UK)

I went into a high street store when some maxell media (dvd-r) were on for £5.99 for 5 discs. Thats more than a pound per disc whereas I can get TY (much better media) at less third of its price.

  22. I took a chance on these and they've worked OK for me so far (no coasters yet)... 100 DVD-R's for $19.99 shipped. As always, YMMV

    Sam's Club has 16X Verbatim inkjet printable DVD+R or DVD-R for under $42.00 for a 100 spindle.

That is a very good deal and highly recommended.

Why does the US always get a better deal on media than the UK?
    Quote Quote
  26. If it's any consolation, the US seems to be getting stung on dual layer media... it's not so bad over here if DL floats your boat.

Plus if you don't mind using older discs (ie 2x or 4x) you can pick up discs for as little as 12p ea...
