  1. I have about 20 video clips averaging 4 minutes each of different frame rates and resolutions which i need to join to make a single 60 minute video. The majority are avi format with one or two in mpg format (which will probably present its own problems). Some are 16:9, others are 4:3. In order to avoid certain problems i am decompressing both the audio and video part of the clips and importing them into the timeline seperately, however the final result is a video with some clips that appear as if they have been stretched and others that appear as if they have been squashed.

Unfortunately i do not have the original videos so i cannot redo the orginal clips and have to work with what i have, and they have to be imported in a certain order so i can't process clips with similar properties. I am using ulead as i want to be able to add transition effects and text to the film. Does anyone know of any better way of doing this? Thanks

Right click the video clip and select "media source options" where you can select " keep aspect ratio". If your project is 4:3 this produce "black bars" top and bottom, a pseudo 16:9 or vice versa if your project is 16:9 and your importing 4:3. You can remove them by dropping a moving path on the clip and use it to zoom in on static part of the video.

  3. Thanks coalman, i'm not in front of my PC right now so i'll try what you suggest, however when opening up Ulead MP7 i am asked to select a template which i presume is the same template used to create the final video, is there an option to keep aspect ratios in the created video and will the different frame rates affect the final output? If so do you have any suggestions as to how to get around this?

    Will , can

The template you select is not necessarily the one used for output, if you select the same template as the one used for output it will only have to encode the video that you haven't already previewed while editing speeding up the encode time. Vice versa if you select a template that matches your source video it will have faster preview. I don't like using the final output as my template because I suspect this introduces problems with audio sync. I match my project settings to whatever the video is, in your case I would try and match whatever the predominant AVI properties are.

Under file>preferences you can select the default setting for aspect when inserting images and video. BTW how this can sometimes be finnicky, for example if I use the 4:3 DV template and insert a 16:9 it should maintain the aspect but it doesn't. The option under media source options is greyed out too, but if I start with a 16:9 project then switch to $;# everthing works as it should. I really have no idea why....

As far as the frame rate conversion I really don'y know because I've never done that or needed too. I know there's a option under file>convert>framerate to convert frame rates. I think that's for a single video and does it before you insert, might be a good idea to give it try.

Hi coalman, i've tried to implement your initial suggestion, however when i right click on the video clip and click on media source options, the "display aspect ratio" and "stretch mode" are both greyed out. Did I miss something? Thanks
