  1. Here's the situation: I backed up all my data on a USB hard drive. Then I reformatted. After the reformat when I tried to load to load my data onto the hard drive I discovered that the device won't start-up. I have already sent an email to tech support but I would like to recover as much data as possible from the hard drive itself. What program do you guys suggest?

PS: My OS is WinXP Pro SP2.

    Thanks for your help,
    -Jonathan.

take the drive out of the USB case and mount it inside your computer first ...

It's a 2.5" drive, does that mean it will only fit in a notebook?

I think there are bridgeboards that will convert that ATA-6 or whatever the interface is on that 2.5" drive to your regular 80-pin ATA connector. Is the data worth that much to you?

  6. If you REALLY want the best, then I recommend Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional 6.04

But, be prepared for sticker shock when you see the price.

I use it professionally to recover data from drives so broken that the OS won't even recognize them as being present.

    A Sircooks commented, getdataback ntfs.

My main 80gb crashed a little over a year ago and after trying a few of the 'online' demos, getdataback seemed to work the best and at that time did not have a limited purchase-use feature, some I looked at would only work for one year - can't remember the names though.

I was able to recover about 98% of the data.

    Hope this helps

another vote for getdataback it works quite nice and you can run it to see what is recoverable BEFORE purchasing the software. Also there are conversion kits to convert the 2.5" drive to normal ide. they are not that expensive either...
