  1. My father just brought home an APC Back-UPS Pro 1400 that the company he works for was about to toss in the dumpster. It works fine. I'm wondering what one of these things sold for and how much time it'll give if power goes down. The APC site doesn't offer much info on it.

1400 will give you a good 20 to 40 minutes, if all you have attached is a pc. Are you sure the thing holds a charge ? That's about the only reason people throw UPSes out.

  3. So far as I can tell it holds charge fine. The owner replaced the battery a couple times over the years. She just got rid of the PC system it was running as decided to toss the UPS as well. It's not an uncommon occurance with this woman.

You should see some of the stuff my friend pirated from work when they moved their office to India. Though their server equipment wasn't the latest and greatest he was still able to nab a dual Xeon 2.0/400 2U server and a ton of 10k U320 SCSI drives. In fact I gaffed half my SCSI storage from him, all the stuff the old workstation is running on right now. They did offer it to employees first, but since they were a call center and he was the only help desk guy he was the only one who knew the funny-looking boxes actually contained some nice computer parts.

I just can't believe what some places would rather throw away than take the time to go through and sell or keep

  5. yeah I personally don't have room to put this. The underside of the dinning room table I call a desk is too cluttered with wiring now. I'm thinking of pawing it off on someone for about $300. I've seen some site on the net that still have this model selling it for over $500 new.

Better sell it locally, because shipping costs would be $$$. Those things are hernias waiting to happen.

  7. No kidding. I looked at that same site for the shipping cost and they charge about $40 to ship. Being they are a business I'd imagine I'd have to pay even more. I've got one of the carpet installer where I work thinking this thing is some kind of miracle device. He'll probably buy the thing when he gets paid this week. When I explained what UPS stands for it was like pure awe dawning in his eyes. The name must have a technosavy ring to it
