  2. that is simply way too many. i'd suggest looking for a hardware bottleneck somewhere as your soundcard clock couldn't possibly be that off

You didn't say what frame size and rate. If you are capping at DVD resolution, that may be your problem. Try different frame sizes until you get one that drops 0 frames, or very few, to see how large a size you can manage. For sure you should be able to get 480x480. Maybe someone else can comment on what the USB device is capable of.

BTW, what source are you using? I have seen some old VHS and 8mm cause high drop rates which I think has something to do with the A/V synchronization on the tape. Not sure if how I worded that is exactly correct but there are people here who may be able to add something.

So, it might be your source, your resolution or your hardware meaning you have to provide more info and probably do some experimenting.

  4. I have an ATI USB tuner device, and at 352x240 (29.97fps) I get a minimum of 10% dropped frames regardless of which codec I was using.

I didn't do my research on this so anyone who feels the need to correct me can do so, but I think it has to do with the speed of the USB 1.1 bus. I would assume that when the video is captured, it gets sent uncompressed through the USB bus to be encoded by the processor. If there isn't enough bandwidth, frames will be dropped.

So I got a PCI card and it works great.

Well i capture audio via the ESS Maestro.

First i can't get sound via the actual device so i go through the sound card.

ALso, i thought sound takes up bandwith, if i capture via the sound card, it leaves for space for audio.
