  1. I have been burning dvds for a while now and I know what i am doing, but lately I have been having trouble burning discs. Not all discs cant be burned with my burner, but enough to where it seems it isnt the disc that is the problem. When i try to decrypt files with dvddecrypter, I get an error "Unable to read Sector 1, Laser position 1", and if I just try to burn with DVDshrink it says "Data Error, Cyclic Redundancy Check". I have an external DVD Burner(the new dual layer burner from sony). Im running XP sp2 by the way. Remember, its not all discs that present this problem for me. Im just wanting to know if anyone has any insight as to why it is doing this.

Probably scratched/dirty disks, try another reader.

I would try a different brand of burnder: Pioneer 109. I've known too many people who have Sony problems.

  4. sony burners are quite crap,as there just rebadged liteon drives, cheaply made.
firmware could play a part in this, but its more than likely a "your using crap media " problem.
try updating the firmware on it,and use a better brand of media, and get the setup of the writer looked at,to see if its set to DMA or PIO mode, the latter being the worst.

I would not recommend doing this unless you are very familiar with electronic devices and are willing to risk trashing your drive. If any attempt at cleaning is made, I would first recommend a quick puff of canned air into the drive with the tray ejected.

If the drive reads/writes other media fine, you may have just gotten a bum batch of media (it happens, even with the high quality stuff).

Sony is either Sony, or Liteon.

If it's Liteon, it's gonna be touchy. They're decent drives, but picky about meida and in desperate need of firmware updates.

If it's Sony, it's garbage. Sony uses sub-par lasers in virtually all their devices except their ultra-high-end units.

  9. CRC errors are usually a result of bad disc burns. Either the media you're using is bad or if you're having trouble reading them from the same drive you burned them with AND the burns were working fine at one time your drive may need cleaning or replacement.

try ripping the commercial dvd in another dvdrom or dvd burner. my bet is your commerical dvd has a scratch or smudge on it or your dvd burner isn't able to read discs that are scratched/smudged.

  15. I've got a Sony drive that's outlasted two Plextor drives a LiteOn and a Pioneer. It only burns at 4x so it's no speed demon, but it's been the superior to all others I've owned, and this thing has close to 1500 burns racked up over the last 3 years. Pretty impressive piece of junk.

    Sony is bizarre.

75% of their burners fail. 50% fail spectacularly immediately - like NEVER burn a SINGLE good disc. It's astonishing that a company with a return rate THAT HIGH is successful.

Unfortunately, part of why they're successful is folks like you - because SOME of their burners, maybe one in ten... last forever. It's weird.

Essentially it means that their quality control is nonexistant.

  17. Yeah, but Sony doesn't make them anymore, not after those 4x, just rebags them, so if thats your results, perhaps its another manf' you should be talking about.

  18. It's a DRU-500A - $369 USD at Best Buy when they first hit the shelf. Ouch. It's been a workhorse over the years though, and still going strong.

  19. The source dvd causing the problems is probably defective. There seems to be a fair amount of that going on these days. I suggest you return it and demand a replacement/refund.

I also have a Sony burner - a DRU-510A - it really is a Sony (the last one actually made by Sony, as far as I have been able to determine). It has worked just fine. My main complaint with this burner is Sony can't be bothered to put out updated firmware, so it cannot deal with newer 8x or higher media. As long as I can get Ritek G04 media - it burns flawlessly.
But I will never buy another Sony burner - not because of any quality control issues - but because of the total lack of ongoing product and customer suppport.
