  1. I received a DVD instructional video from the manufacturer of a bike that I recently purchased. But the DVD can only be played in a DVD player and not in a computer. I don't have a DVD player. We use my wife's iBook to view DVDs on TV.

When I load the DVD in my PowerMac G5, with Pioneer 109, it does not load in the finder. Toast sees it, and so I tried copying it, but the copy is "locked" just like the original.

MacTheRipper doesn't register that there is a disc in the drive.

VLC gets the disc spinning via command+D (open disc), but nothing comes up.

Apple's DVD Player doesn't see it.

Is there anyway to view the DVD on my Mac?

Sounds like it might be DVD-RAM or that it might be
    DVD-VR recorded.

You say Toast "saw" the DVD, and you were able to copy it.
What if you made a disc image of the DVD using Toast?
Would the DVD disc image then mount on your G5?
If so, then you should be able to rip it via MTR, and then
    burn it back to disc.

  4. Under the 'recorder' menu in Toast, the disc information reads under the 'Type' column:

    Data (Hybrid)
    ISO-9660

Per Terryj's suggestion, Toast was able to save it to a disc image, I think. the result was a 2.2GB file named "<no volume>.toast". I double clicked on it and it showed up in Toast under the 'Copy' tab and below the file name, "2.2 GB UDF Bridge DVD". When I clicked the 'Mount' button in Toast, nothing happened.

    MTR doesn't show anything.

  5. I tried control clicking on the <no volume>.toast file and tried opening with "DiskImageMounter" but the file has "no mountable file systems".

  6. I opened up Disk Utility and it showed either the disc or the disc image from toast in the left left column. I control clicked on it and chose 'information'. A window opened with the following:

    Type : Disk

    Disk Identifier : disk6
Media Name : Roxio, Inc. disk image Media

You'll need something to edit the IFO then,
    so you can unlock it.

    Gumby maybe?
    something similar to ISO Buster?

wait a minute...you said you could get a disc image created.
Can Disk Utility mount it? In your utilities folder?

basically, we have two ways of doing this:

hard--Get something to eidt the ISO so you can unlock it
( the one created by Toast)
easy--Get the VOBs off the disc, by getting it mounted,
    and extracting the .VOBs

  8. Im betting Terr is your guy on this but let me add what I can

I hve a few DVD's made with a Sony VCR -> DVD recorder. they start or stay as Sonata for the DVD label in the computers desk top unless you tell the DVD recorder to title them differently.

they appear on the desktop and apples dvd player will play them but toast on checking the info through it does not know what they are and says:

cound't read the table of contents. the disk may be damaged.

so toast won't deal with these disks. there is comerial software for this bnut I do not recall the link, but thats not for the type of disk you have.

you have to see what the file type is on the Iso disk and I don't khnw how to look into that

when the disk is in the comp what does apple sys profile say about it?
bet terr does and he will reply when he gets around to it.

Im betting you are out of luck. can you try it on an UGGHHH PC?

  9. I changed the file name to breakaway.img. Then I opened the disk image with Disk Utitliy. The image shows up in DU, lower left column and the "mount" feature is no longer grayed out. However, when I select the image and click mount, nothing happens.

I've downloaded ISO Buster. I'll try that via VPC7 tomorrow. It's 1:30AM right now...I live in China. Thanks for your help!!!

We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

  10. Ok, I changed my mind and stayed up. I installed ISO Buster in VPC and it's extracting the VIDEO_TS folder as I type this.

I assume that I should use MTR once ISO Buster is finished, then burn with Toast?

  11. It works! I'm viewing the VIDEO_TS folder via Apple's DVD Player. I'll burn the folder with Toast, now.

    Thank you so much Terr!

I rarely go to VPC, only when I have to. In this case I had to.

yes, That is what I thought...that the IFO would need to
be edited...and unfortuantely, ISO Buster is the only app
I know of that could do it....Glad it is working!
    Your Welcome...!

and yes, MTR will NOT be needed, as the disc being locked
is a feature of the IFO structure, much like locking a disc
partition in the OS, instead of a true "copy protection"
scheme like ArCCos or Macrovision. Locking the disc was
a poor man's way of "protecting" it.
