  1. here's the deal. i own a pioneer 520hs dvr with firewire input/output. had for about 3 months. works flawlessly. i just got a panasonic pvgs 150 dv camcorder a few days ago.after playing with it for a while, i finally got around to hooking it up to my dvr's firewire input. dvr says "no camcorder detected". damn!! ok, i go through all the settings on cam and dvr numerous times. nothing worked. should be pretty straightforward. hooked up cam to pc firewire input with pc having a clean install of xp. nothing again. i installed sp2, with no cam detected again.now i'm sweating bullets.put in a different mobo with xp, no sp and with sp2. no luck. ok, i'm thinking it's gotta be the cam, not the dvr. finally, i hooked up the dvr to the pc.after a few seconds, xp asks if i want to record video, and dvr shows up under explorer. ok, not the dvr. i can capture video from dvr to pc.is it at all possible that a firewire input could go bad one way-meaning input only is bad? could it possibly be a conflict of somekind between cam and dvr? doubt that. so what do you suggest? i'm leaning towards sending the cam back for repair or replacement. the cam is outstanding otherwise. svid works on it, but i gotta get the firewire working. i'm really guessing it HAS to be the cam. anyone ever hear of this happening on a camcorder before? i got it from onecall.com and they are great to deal with on the phone, so return for repair is not going to be a problem. thanks in advance for anyones input. and no, i don't have access to another dv cam to test in the dvr.

seems to be the camcorder, since the cable is working with your DVR.

I'm not familiar with that camcorder, but sometimes you need to be plugged into the wall outlet (and not using a battery).

Have you recorded something, and then put the camcorder into playback mode (with firewire connections in place).

btw, I recommend having the firewire cables connected BEFORE turning on the camcorder. Doing it the other way can cause problems...

PCs have 6 pin firewire ports and I probably his DVR also use the same six pin connector. Since cameras usually have 4 pins firewire ports, the problem could be cause by a bad 6 to 4 pins firewire cable.

I had this problem in the past. At that time I was not able to to capture video from my TRV361 D8 camera.

Agree with GeorgeW; connect camcorder via FW, switch on (playback mode, of course), then launch capture app. If that doesn't resolve it, try a new cable. If you have a Mac handy, plug in the camcorder, switch it on, launch iMovie. It should come up in capture mode. If not, try a new cable. If that doesn't work, it's a bad FW chip in the camcorder.

  6. my dvr is a pioneer 520hs which has a 4pin input. i hooked that up to my pc with brand new cable and it was recognized automatically. someone from onecall(won't mention his name) said maybe it was so new that it wasn't backwards compatible? or that panny might have a driver update? i'm thinking to myself, no way. i called panny and they said they do not release firewire drivers, which i already knew. but onecall wanted me to confirm before i returned it. panny actually said if my pc recognized the dvr, it must be a bad firewire input on the cam. so i'm now awaiting my exchange. the pvgs150 is out of stock at onecall. by the way--i was floored by the quality of the three chips. amazing!
