If so, I think I have a bad one because sometimes when I have a firewire HD connected to it, and then I go to turn on my camera, the HD loses its connection as if one firewire device interferes with another one plugged into the same card.

Can someone recommend a good firewire card that I can buy, preferably more than 3 ports on it?

This is a common problem when using a firewire HDD and camcorder on the same card. Better to use separate cards. Adding inputs won't help, you need additional controller chips to the PCI bus.

So the problem isn't the card, it's that I need another card in other words?

That is one possible solution. Motherboard 1394 ports behave better in my experience. Others may have better comments and product recommendations.
