This is annoying, my cursor occasionally jumps around the screen when I'm trying to point at something. I have a USB mouse connected to the laptop but it used to do the same on the touch pad. Anyone know what's causing it?

Why is it doing that?

My Microsoft wireless mouse does the same thing....very annoying. I open Intellipoint then click the hardware tab and it stops but not permantly. I have to do it at every start-up.

If it's wireless, you might try relocating the receiver. You'll have problems sometimes if it's too close to your mouse.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -

"Baby - If i dont hit it, Who will?"

Try removing it from device manager and letting it redetect. I'd also try a different mouse to see if it makes a difference.

Been there done that. I only found a software update for the mouse on Microsoft's web galaxy.

Thanks for your thoughts, its a cable USB Microsoft mouse but the laptops touchpad did the same. The laptop is clean from viruses, its never been connected to the internet. I use an old workhorse W98 400mhz for internet surfing!
There were no driver discs with it so it must use XPs. I'll have a look at mouse settings as suggested. Why is it doing that? -
Mine started doing the same (jumping) when DirectX 9.0c came out.
Coincidence?

My MS mouse at work does this. Its the mouse, it needs to be replaced. Try another mouse and see what happens.

I had it happen with a PS/2 mouse. Turned off the fast initialization option for it in the properties and fixed it. I've had the same problem with a USB mouse and there is no such option for it. My current PC has a PS/2 mouse and Fast Initialize is one with no issues. Go figure.

we have this issue alot where I work with laptop users. The touchpad and the mouse start "fighting" with one another. Not sure if this is your actual issue, but it's worth a shot.
Look in your bios settings for mouse settings. I know on Dell laptops you can set it to Touchpad/PS2 or just PS2 mode. Basically when you set it to PS2, the Touchpad will continue to work UNTIL you plug in a PS2 mouse. At this point it will automatically DISABLE the touchpad. This has resolved alot of weird jumpy mouse problems for me. -
Mines Wireless and I've had it drift around occasionally, try blasting it with some air in a can.
