  1. Sorry if i'm posting in the wrong forum. (If you know the right forum let me know)

I have a avi file that I want to upsize(upsample..etc) to 1280 X 720. The source is 720 x 480. The thing is I can't find a good program/filter that can do a decent upsampling/sizing the doesn't make the picture look soft. I tried virtualdub with the sharpening filter after i upsample the video but it doesn't seem to work to well. Maybe i'm doing it wrong or something.

I was thinking about avisynth but it seems a bit complicated as I don't know the coding for it.

Does anyone know a good way/ or program for me to upsample/size the video.

    Thanks

  2. Which resizing method did you use in VirtualDub? The default is Nearest Neighbor which is the worst. Try one of the BiCubics or Lanczos3.

And you realize you're not going to create detail that isn't there right?

You are asking a lot when you are resizing by almost 100%. Softness is inevitable. As junkmalle suggested, use Lancsos3 as your filter in virtualdub. I would also suggect the unsharp mask by Antonio Foranna and Donald Sharp, with a diameter setting of 3 (5 in a few cases). You should be able to find a link at Don's site ( http://neuron2.net/ ). I have found to be a much better option.

I've been wanting a filter like Photoshop's unsharp mask!

It's cool, but very strong in the default settings (it's +5 out of the box - I usually pull it back a notch)
