  1. I captured several movies from my old 8mm camcorder to .mpg files. Some are quite large (up to 7gb). Captured in DVD format using ATI All-in-wonder.

I then used Pinnacle Studio to edit them and lo and behold, it won't let me create a DVD because it's too big, so I just created another .mpg (edited).

Now my problem was I couldn't find anything to convert that large .mpg to
a large DVD (>4.7gb). If I could, then I could use DVDShrink to bring it down to a 4.7gb std sized DVD.
Tried everything I could get my hands on - must have every piece of trial and/or free video software there is.
Nero re-code wouldn't do it. cucosoft wouldn't do it, etc., etc.......

    Any recommendations from experts?

    Thanks,
    Jim

  2. Thanks but no cigar. I had previously tried TmpGenc Author 1.6 and it gets to point of warning me my output DVD is 5.5 gb and then stops.
BTW, I also tried just making a .vob file, and then using ifoedit/vobedit to create the full set of DVD files and they both fail miserably.

    Thanks,
    Jim

  3. Does your card capture the audio as PCM?

When you get to the point the TDA stops and gives your warning message you just click on OK and TDA will process the files, it will be over the standard but then you run through DVDShrink. I have be able to create a number of large MPEG files that initinal were over the 4.7 GB limit in TDA and DVDShrink.

  5. I don't see pcm listed as a capture mode, but I did have the option of either DVD low/medium/high. Unfortunately, I chose the high - should've done low (hindsight, ain't it great?).

I downloaded TmpGenc DVD Author again and will give it another shot.

Load your mpeg file/s in Avicodec or the newest version of Gspot. Check your audio. If it is uncompressed I would compress it to mpeg1 layer 2 audio. Much smaller allowing for more video and is standard dvd compliant.

  7. Your card is probably capturing pcm audio. To fill a dvd you are probably looking at almost 1 gig just for audio alone. What I do is use TMPGENC to demux the audio as a wav. Then I take ffmpegui to convert the wav to ac3. File goes from 1 gig for audio to about 100mb. Big diffrence that help you to get more video without having to use shrink and lose some quality in your video, which is the most important thing

Use more discs. Buy DL media. Shrinking hurts quality. Use AC3 or MP2 and not PCM.

Don't make this mistake in the future. Bitrate calculation is your friend.
