    Compressor 1.2

    since reinstalling OS & software.
File >Export>Compressor-with either browser or timeline selected.
browser flicks on to export tab briefly then back to sequence tab, drive clicks & thats it.
Compressor works ok with imported QT files.

THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH FCP 4.0!!!
    sorry, didn't mean to shout....

Besides upgrading to FCP 4.5 ( which you can do for free
through Software Update, provided you have a legit copy)
to get your sequence exported you need to instead go:

    File>Export> Quicktime

and much like iMovie, FCP will export a QT Reference movie of
your sequence(edits) including audio and video.
You then drag THAT into Compressor's Batch window,
and set your output settings. Set, click Go, and your off.

    Hi,

We just updated our QT exporter to work with Final Cut. Most of our testing was on the newest FCP. I you're willing to test drive our plug-in and work with me to work out any kinks, we'll give you a copy as a thank-you.

Screenshots of our QT plug in action are here. Demo version is here.

If anyone else hammers on our plug-in and finds a grievance, similar offer extended. Due to spam considerations, best way to reach me is by private message or here.

That's a nice plug-in, but how much control do you get over the export?
How customizable is it? I have over 30 custom Compressor presets, tweaked for diffrent bit rates, diffrent output
    formats, etc.

Again, for what he's simply trying to accomplish, just
save the QT reference movie from export, and drag drop
that into Compressor. Set it with your preset, and let it work.

I think you'll find that when it comes to the actual MPEG encoding process, there are very few encoders available, on any platform, that can be customized to the extent that MegaPEG can. You have a much wider range of control over the motion estimation algorithm, the size of the search window, and access to quantization and filtering options that are designed specifically for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.

But for you, if you like tweaking Compressor, you'll probably get a kick out of MPressionist.X, which will show you exactly how your Compressor tweaks are affecting the bitstream.
