Depends on what your criteria are.

You will undoubtebly want -R, -RW, +R, +RW and +DLRW compatibility and I would add to that region free firmware availability.

The latest drives from Pioneer and TEAC are good choices.

I still use my ageing Pioneer 116 DVDROM and have not yet found the time to replace it with a newer model. It still performs well, although it won't work well with +RW media.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

After going through the frustration of trying to get my 3520 to work in dma mode, including Compaq replacing the MB, only to find it was the dvd rom that caused it to not work, I just replaced it with another 3520 and updated the firmware and they both now read at 16x.

With good 8x media I can do a disc to disc on the fly copy in 7 min

  4. Lite-on drives are good and cheap and usually aren't speed locked.

  5. Aopen 1648 AAP is a good drive and comes with no speedlock. Make sure you update to 1.02 firmware. Liteon 167T is a great choice as well and Liteons are speedlocked. Go here to get firmware to unlock.

I personally use a Combo drive to pair up with my DVD writer. I have a Liteon 5232K in one machine and an Artek 52C16 in another and they both work great. They are also faster at burning CD-R's and handle copy protected CD's great. The price is usually fairly close between the two so I go for the Combos.

I agree. This is the fastest drive out there for reading discs (ripping).
Other than the benQ 1620 after the speed read FW is put on.
COPIED OVER 600 DVDS SO FAR
