I have an LG gh22ns30 DVD Burner. I have a project going where I'm ripping a lot of unencrypted discs.

When I first bought the drive it was pretty slow as far as read speed. It was around 4x So I used media speed code edit and the drive speed increased to around 12x

Everything was fine until a few days ago. Suddenly, the drive read speed stays at exactly 1.2x I've hit it with speed edited firmware several times but it makes no difference. The drive is just stuck at 1.2x. Which makes it useless to me.

Has anybody ever had this problem? Is the drive just broken? I really don't want to waste money on another drive. This is only about 1 year old.

check to see if the drive has been demoted to pio mode instead of dma.

or just try using imgburn's reset dma tool.

about the only other thing to try would be a new cable, in case a crimp damaged the old one.

I agree with aedipuss. This sounds suspiciously to me like a PIO mode issue. You might want to know that Microsoft deliberately wrote XP (I cannot comment on other versions of Windows) to cause this to happen under certain conditions. I understand why they did it, but I would argue that the decision was poorly thought out.

You should also be aware that if this is your issue that sometimes it can require editing the registry to fix this. Maybe you will get lucky and the ImgBurn reset will work, but if not, you'll need to monkey with the registry to fix this. If you've never done this before and don't know exactly what that means, you need to get help doing it as you can do a lot of damage if you make mistakes.

Thanks for the replies. I've been through the PIO issues with other drives. But this is a SATA drive- that shouldn't apply right?

Anyway, I have a Blu Ray burner that I bought a while ago but never used. I hooked that up and it was reading the same DVD at 5x. So it's not the SATA cable. And I am running XP.

I don't really know how to edit the registry, but I could reinstall Windows. If you think that would help. I really don't want to buy another drive. And I was planning on Ebaying the Blu Ray burner as I have no real use for it.

Well, I'm transfering everything to hard drives. Once that's done, I will have little use for a DVD burner. So I'm not crazy about buying another one. $100 for a 2tb hard drive is cheaper than what I was paying for Taiyos and cases. Plus I don't have a bunch of cases cluttering up my house.

Anyway, I took the Blu ray burner out and reinstalled the problem drive to try the Imgburn tool. But first I tried ripping a DVD in it. And the speed gradually increased. Within 2 minutes it was over 10x So I guess it ok for now.

I'm still a little freaked out. I can't figure out what would cause that.
