  1. My computer doesn't currently have firewire support. I am preparing capture my home videos and more with my zr65 (analog to dv pass through).Soooo

are all firewire cards the same for what I want to do. I am going to connect the firewire i/o of my canon zr65 to a firewire port on my computer. I have seen pci firewire cards for $10 on up. I was actually considering getting a canopus advc 50 but I was wondering if this would make a difference in the quality of the capture (especially when I moved on to passing vhs through the camcorder)

If your pass through works on your camera, that is basically the same as the ADVC. The ADVC may be more convenient, but it will work just as well, quality wise.

As far as Firewire cards, yes, they are mostly the same. I don't know that I would spend as little as $10US for one, but $15-20 should be sufficient.

They are becoming more common now with all the camcorders out, the prices are very reasonable.

Firewire is not a "capture" it is a real time data transfer.

As with everything else, things are made using different components.
Some may or may not be more compatable with other components in your system

More $ is not always the correct criteria.
Functionally they should in theory be the same

If using with Windows XP, make sure the card is OHCI (open host controller interface) compliant. Similar to these in the link. No special driver will be needed. Different rules apply for Win98, Linux and Mac.

Budz, I thought you'd suggest newegg.com before Compusa.

I personally find newegg and zipzoomfly (formerly googlegear) to be the best deals on computer supplies.

Yes, I am a Newegg.com whore but shipping costs are 2day FEDEX to Honolulu, Hawaii therefore COMPUSA is cheaper for that ADAPTEC FIREWIRE CARD. I buy other computer components like CPU, MOTHERBOARD, & DVDRW from Newegg.
