  1. Is it possible to take a one hour mini-dv video and do the following:

    capture it,

    encode it,

    author it ,

    burn it,

    without losing so much of the file. For example when I use ulead dvd movie factory to do a all-in-one dvd I lose alot of the size of the original file. A 12GB file will be compressed to a 4GB file. I know this will fit better on a dvd but the quality is not as good as the mini-dv. Is it possible to compress alot less to get better quality?

    I do not care if I have to put it on more than one dvd.

    If so what tools do I need?

    Thanks

  2. Use a different encoder, and encode at a higher bitrate. Split it into as many disks as you like, generally at about 1 hour high quality per dvdr.

    Also look at on-line manual on ulead site;
    ftp://ftp.ulead.com/pub/Manual/DVDMovieFactory/3.0/dvdmf_standard_e.zip
    or for disc creator version here;
    ftp://ftp.ulead.com/pub/Manual/DVDMovieFactory/3.0/dvdmf_advanced_e.zip.

    BTW, don't follow the guide above verbatum as it is for capturing already compliant files, but enabling the advanced encoding option allows you to tweak the settings in the encoder built into mf (based on mainconcept encoder) to hopefully improve your output quality.
