I am looking for an app that will capture parts/chapters of a DVD directly to either MPEG2 or AVI. I know that several apps (DVD Shrink, TMPGEnc Xpress, VirtualDubMod, etc.) will capture either the complete VOB or allow you to rip chapters to an VOB, but I have a friend that is not real literate with converting formats and I would like to make it as simple as possible for him, so I would like him to be able to rip chapters from a DVD directly to either MPEG2 or AVI. DVD2AVI of course does this for AVIs, but AFAIK it doesn't allow the user to define chapters/sections. DVD Shrink and DVDDecrypter allow the user to grab chapters, but they output to VOB files. I believe there is a Mac app (Mac the Ripper) that does what I want to do - I just need to find the same thing for Windows. Does anyone know of such an app?

  3. You can just rename the VOB files to MPG. This can occassionally give you the wrong audio if there are foreign tracks or a commentary on there, but for the most part this works well. Certainly the easiest thing to do.

DVDx is ok, but I have had problems with it. DGMPGDec is worth checking out though.

  5. He didn't say he needed subtitles, so that's a mute point i think.

One other easy way would be to use Chopper XP to extract the scenes you want from the VOB, then use TMPGEnc's Mpeg Tools feature to Multiplex the new VOB you have created to an MPG. I've just done this on a whole load of scenes I extracted from multiple VOBs and it works a treat. It may sound a complex multi-step process, but it's really quite easy when you get into it, and these apps are pretty idiot proof.
