  1. I'm having problems with a bunch of AVI files. When I try to open them in WMP it says it can't download an appropriate decompressor and proceeds to play them with just the video. Then I try to open them in TMPG to convert them to VCD. It opens them but leaves the Audio Source section at the bottom of the screen completely blank. I opened each AVI file in Gspot, the codec identifier tool. Each file opens fine and Gspot claims that I have video AND an audio codec that should be capable of playing the clip. I noticed a common link in each of these files. The codec that Gspot claims should be capable of playing the audio portion of the clip is Code# 0X0055 Fraunhofer IIS Mpeg Layer-3 codec (advanced). The driver name is l3codeca.acm and is located in my windows\system32 file. So I took a couple of the files to virtual dub. I saved the audio portion of the clip as a wav. I then went back to TMPG and opened the video clip and then loaded the wav file for the audio source. I converted it to VCD. When I played back the newly created mpeg the sound played in pieces, I would hear audio for a split second, then not hear it for a split second...this goes on throughout the whole clip. Yet when I play the wav file by itself with WMP, it sounds just fine. So I'm requesting help mostly on the audio codec problem. I won't even have to mess with virtual dub and wav files if I get the codec problem straightened out. So I'd like to solve that if someone can help. But I'll take any help you might have on why I'm having the other problem with TMPG. If I can hear the wav file just fine in WMP, why do I get constant gaps on the audio of the created mpeg file. I know there are some very bright people on this site. Any help from you would be appreciated. Thank you.

If this is a recent issue, then perhaps your quartz dll file is corrupted. Start by re(installing) DirectX 9.0c and see if that fixes it.
