  1. I have a strange situation. I took some avi files and used dvdSanta to make vob's from them. The output was about 5.8 gigs of info in VOBs. I then used tmpg dvd author to import the DVD files and make a menu. After I finished the menu I then clicked to save the output and it dropped my 5.3 gigs of vobs down to 4 gigs of VOBs (of course killing the quality).

I looked over EVERY option and I don't see how this occured.

Should I have taken my output from dvdSanta and compressed it with DVDshrink BEFORE using the tmpg dvd author?

I just dont' see why it would have compressed it WAY below what a standard single layer DVD's max can be. (I looked into the options and there are no size settings (and nothing in the help about compresion).

  2. TmpGenc DVD Author does not include an encoder or transcoder for video, so it cannot have compressed the video. My only thought as to what might have happened is that you generated the vobs in DVDSanta with LPCM audio (uncompressed) and TDA converted this to mp2 or Ac3 (if you have the Ac3 plugin). This would explain the reduction in size. There will be no quality loss in the video and probabaly no noticeable quality loss in the audio.

The only caveat is that mp2 audio is not officially supported as part of the NTSC DVD specification. So if you are in NTSC land there is a small chance that your standalone will not play the audio.

  3. Interesting I saw no option on tmpg converting audio. Yes mine was left unconverted on dvdSanta the LPCM checked.

Will it always do that or is there a place I can force it not to do that and therefor yield more compatibility?

Or do you think I should let it do what its done and leave the less compatibilty for more on a disk with no video degridation?
